Anyone know what this fruit is? Sorry the photo is not any better. My husband brought home a bunch of fruit from a fruit basket today and this was in it. I did a search and looked for pics online but was coming up empty. I think 'odd fruit' search just returns too many results. I want to cut it open for more details but my husband does not want to cut until we know what it is.

I think it's prickly pear, too. But it's usually red...maybe that is overripe?

Thanks so much! I did a search on prickly pear and I think that is it. It is not real spiky on the exterior but the rest looks the same. Now that I hear that name I recall it being used a few times on Chopped (once for a sorbet). Now I wish I had more of them to try it out - that was the only one in the basket.

Yeah, the color is kinda dark purple. A small squeeze test indicates its very firm. Never having prickly pear before I'm not sure if that is under or overripe.

Yeah, prickly pear! Careful with handling them...sometimes they have cactusy microfine pokers on them that embed themselves right in your skin. But they are tasty in salads.

Damn! As an Arizona native I wish I was the first to identify this. Stuff grows wild around here.

I got excited to see one at the grocery store not too long ago. When I was young, I would try to grab them straight off the cactus which ended up in my mother sitting me down to remove all the little thorns.
