i have been purchasing way too much coconut kefir lately...$5 a bottle is breaking me. so i've been looking into making my own. does anybody here have any experience with making vegan kefir? i keep reading that after making a few batches of coconut kefir that the grains should be "recharged" in dairy milk. is that true? i definitely don't want to do that. also, where can i get the grains? and is it possible at all to get vegan grains? can this process actually be vegan at all? lots of questions..

i did find this though..
Quote:
Dairy Free Option: While using Milk Kefir Grains is the most effective way to make Coconut Milk Kefir, there is a truly dairy-free option for those who cannot use Milk Kefir Grains. Add 1/4 cup Water Kefir (finished kefir, not the Water Kefir Grains) to 2-4 cups of Coconut Milk. Cover loosely and allow to culture for 24 hours.

I can type everything up for you later when the book is in front of me, but in Ani's Raw Food Essentials, she has a recipe for making kefir(although I don't remember if her's is coconut based or not).

Obviously I'm running a little late here .. did anyone ever have luck making coconut milk kefir? I'd like to try to make some, but everything I can find online says to use dairy grains and recharge them. I make water kefir already, and I'm wondering if the "dairy free option" above will really work. Any advice would be great!

Like your avatar picture, the cat there looks like our second, very beloved, family cat.

I've been making water kefir for several months now.

I haven't tried it yet, but I found this recipe for making coconut water kefir -- no dairy kefir grains required
http://www.culturesforhealth.com/coconu ... fir-recipe

It looks extremely easy so I think I will try it with my next batch in a few days and report back

I just tried my first batch from this formula:

It doesn't taste like store bought water kefir ( Kevita ) but it was fairly nice and mind numbingly easy to do.
