I have to make and bring dinner for a group I volunteer with. I'm trying to decide between chili, Moroccan tagine, mushroom ragout, and salads. I will be coming from work and serving it there, so everything has to be done ahead of time. Which option would you choose and what additions would you suggest? Or do you have another idea? Thanks for your opinions!

Whatever is easiest! I vote chili. Easy to transport, one pot meal.

i voted for tagine, but I liked the chili option too. If you do go with tagine, I'd suggest just making quinoa for everyone (instead of Couscous AND rice).

I voted for mushroom ragout over polenta. It's probably pretty easy to make and transport, plus it's one of those things that seem fancy and impressive and the omnis hopefully won't be all 'where's the meat?' because of the mushrooms.

Tagine with quinoa is different and interesting and fun. And delicious!

Do you have a big slow cooker? Do you have somewhere with a power outlet you could stash a slow cooker without coworkers helping themselves or the smell of cooking food taking over (or an area no one will mind smelling like food)?

If so I would opt for the chili or tagine, and do them in a slow cooker. If you have an electric kettle you could premix couscous with seasonings and just boil water to pour over it a few minutes before you leave work. Combine them in a (sealable!!!) container and you've got cous cous that'll be ready by the time you get to your volunteering place, and yum. If you do the chili you could bake cornbread and bring that. All this assumes you have a car and room to transport all that, of course.

If you don't have a slow cooker or reasonable way to heat the food up, I would go with the salad option.. You could pack it with cold packs and toss any greens with dressing at the last minute. Robin Robertson has a great lentil and tofeta salad with roasted beets, parsnips, and carrots and walnuts in Vegan on the Cheap. with some crispy bread toast things and a crisp white wine it would be a delicious meal! Go easy on the tofeta and lentils, maybe, though, because meateaters have tender little stomachs. I also like to do an unchicken caesar. I usually start with the Vegan Planet dressing recipe but in addition to the greens and croutons I'll do veggie chicken, avocado (cut at the last minute), tomatoes, green onions, etc to make it more substantial. It's a good meal by itself. Dress the whole thing at the last minute.

Though I would personally love any of these options, I think the veggie chili option would be easiest for you and most appreciated by your group.

I agree. Chili is all well and good for an every day, at home meal, but it strikes me as kind of boring and ordinary for this kind of occasion; you have a better chance of impressing with something a bit more exotic!

Thanks for your answers, all! I am still considering. It's right now between my favorite chili recipe, Melisser's chipotle hominy stew (have you had this? make it!) and tagine. I really like the quinoa idea and the crockpot idea - special thanks! Please continue to vote if you are so inclined, and I will keep you updated.

Yum, I love it too, as a meal. The ragout over polenta gets my vote.

I would be most excited about the tagine. But it really depends on how adventurous these omnis are. Chilli is safe, familiar, and would be enjoyable to most people. And easy for you, which I think is the most important factor!

Mushroom ragout! People get excited about polenta. Just make sure there are no mushroom haters. And if there are, tell them to stay at home and reevaluate their tastebuds.

I picked the mushroom/polenta because that's most in line with my taste preferences, but depending on what the omnis are like I might pick the chili because it is full of protein and heads off those kinds of questions.

Tagine with quinoa, or just lemon rice. I'd make everything GF - easier/more inclusive.

I voted the tangine because it's different, and Isupport making it with rice for everyone.
But the mushroom and polenta combo also sounds really really good!

Chili remains the dish that omnis tend to rave over when I make it, so I voted chili. Plus you never know how picky some people are! My sister swears she hates onions but forgets every single time you have to put onions in chili, and she loves it anyway.

I voted for the chili cause I think it's the most omni friendly and people like being able to personalize their toppings. I like to serve it with lime wedges for squeezing over i addition to everything else you have for toppings. If you have time, you could probably make a gluten free corn bred to serve with it, otherwise, the corn chips are a good idea. I also like to serve oven roasted winter squash as a side to chili, but that might be impractical in this situation.

Yeah, I think chili is the safest though and that's a consideration I always keep in mind when serving omnis and strangers or anyone where I really don't know their tastes food-wise.

Yeah, lots of omnis I have to feed are squeamish about more "ethnic" dishes such as tagine and the like. Chili is familiar and safe, and pretty much always a crowd pleaser. Good luck!

Tagine! It's fancy and most people probably wouldn't make it for themselves at home, so the whole experience will be fun. If I made chilli I would worry that people would be like 'it's good, but I like the meaty version I make at home'. I feel like people wouldn't really make the comparison with a tagine. The mushroom ragout sounds really good too, but mushroom haters are so common (I live with one!).

I'd vote chili OR serving the tagine with *just* rice (but make it lemony like the cous cous idea) so everyone has the same base. I think the mushrooms and polenta sounds lovely - everything does, really - but I feel like there's always a mushroom hater in a group.

Awww.

And seriously, while I suggested chili, I never have any desire to eat chili outside of my own kitchen. Ha.
