Scientific research has shown there's a chemical in chicken soup that is beneficial for germ factories like me (sniff). What's a vegan equivalent? (cough cough) What's a non-synthetic chemical therapeutic? (ah... Ah... ACHOO!!)
For the record, I consider whisky to be a non-synthetic chemical therapeutic, but I'm already running low. (hic!)
Ugh. Tanks for de helb.

I find miso soup to be a good replacement as far as it being warm and comforting. There's got to be something beneficial about it though, right? Miso is fermented, and fermented stuff is good for you.

miso!
Amy's makes a really good vegan chicken noodle soup, but I don't know about health benefits, besides tasty warm goodness.

Aren't garlic, ginger and onions particularly good for boosting immunity? Maybe somebody can confirm, because I'm not sure how I know this...

Make the chickpea cabbage and rice soup on the PPK blog! My kiddo and I love it when we get sick and magically our colds don't seem to last very long (knocks wood).

I like miso soup with a lot of seaweed in it when I'm sick.

Rasam! It's a spicy Indian broth of lentils/beans with many other good things. Depending on the recipe it might include: lemon, tomato, and or tamarind; garlic, onion, ginger, asafetida, turmeric, black pepper, curry leaves, cilantro, and of course hot peppers. It's full of vitamin C, the hot peppers clear congestion, I think onion ginger and garlic are good for a cold like Nicole said, and you can taste it no matter how bad your sinuses are!

Chickpea Noodle Soup from V'Con/the PPK blog! It has miso and is super comforting.
Pho is really good for colds too. Add extra jalapeño or siracha to really knock the sick out of you.

i make a "yellow" soup with lots of turmeric, onions, ginger, garlic and cilantro or parsley.
miso is what we eat for stomach problems, but if you get kind of weird and throw in a lot of garlic, it's just as good as ^^.

This soup was one of the first recipes I made after going vegan. It's still yummy and I do think it helps when you have a cold. Fresh dill is better if you have it hanging around. http://eatpeaceplease.blogspot.com/2006 ... 2.html?m=1

If I can hijack a bit, what's the best vegan bouillion for drinking when ill? I usually alternate between hot tea with a ton of sugar and chicken bouillion, but now I have no idea what to sub for the bouillion. Preferably something really salty and that comes in dry cubes or granules.

Another vote for both chickpea noodle soup and miso soup. I always crave them when I'm sick.

Miso.
1. Because it is yummy 2. Because it is SUPER EASY to make. Don't know about the rest of you, but if I am home sick, I don't wanna cook. Miso soup: Miso, hot water, soy sauce, seaweed, chopped tofu, chopped green onions. Literally takes about 5 minutes to make.
Pho is also super good and easy to make if you are sick. If you get the ready made broth that is (the Pacific brand is vegan and really good). Then you just heat it up, and throw in the rest of the stuff you like (bean sprouts, herbs, noodles etc). It only takes as long to make as it takes to boil the noodles, which is like 10 minutes.
Any of the Amy's canned soups are good. I just had the golden lentil soup on NYE (I was sick on NYE. yay) and it was pretty fantastic.
Like I said, when sick, its allllllll about convenience.

That's the vegetable flavor, which I like a lot, but the same company also makes a vegetarian "chicken" flavor ( found here). I haven't actually tried the "chicken" one yet but maybe that would make a good base for homemade noodle soups?

I had some miso packets that were pretty good for this - it was just the powder, so it was good for making in a mug and sipping. I think it was something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Miso-Cup-Reduced- ... words=miso but I can't remember if that was the exact brand or not. Alternatively you could make your own bouillion mix, like this: http://veganfeastkitchen.blogspot.com/2 ... batch.html

You have to make sure you buy their vegetarian version as they do a real chicken version as well.

I use it for everything - soups, sauces, gravies, mashed potatoes, soaking cashews or soy curls, marinades, you name it. It would never have occurred to me to drink it, but I'm sure it would fit the bill!

Yes, that 'no chicken' stuff is the best! but also, like linanil said, they have a real chicken version, and it looks almost exactly the same as the vegan version.

My 'funny' story was telling my husband to pick one up from the store, he picked up the real chicken one. I told him it was the wrong one, he said he thought the 'better' in the name meant it was vegetarian.

I accidentally bought the real chicken one too - came home, made some rice with it and was wondering why it smelled so funny. Luckily, I realized what happened before I ate any. The No-Chicken stuff is great though! I just finished up a jar making the AFR PotPie Stew yesterday. SO GOOD!

The good stuff actually has a V on the label, but it doesn't really stand out, and the packaging looks so similar otherwise that it would be an easy mistake to make. Nicole wrote: I just finished up a jar making the AFR PotPie Stew yesterday. SO GOOD! Thanks for reminding me of this excellent application for it; that will be happening at our house within the week!
