Hey guys! Those of you who were around two years ago will remember the amazing Mad Hatter Tea Party I had planned for my 30th birthday, which was to be the first birthday party I'd had in over a decade. You may also remember that I got super, super sick on my birthday and had to cancel at the last minute after putting in a bunch of work and planning. It turned out I had pneumonia, and was sick for so long that by the time I was better it was March and no one cared about my stupid birthday anymore. Then last year I was all "bah humbug, birthdays suck BLAH" and did nothing. BUT! I've decided that this year I'm getting my do-over, dammit! So, you know, FOOD.

I don't remember everything I was going to make two years ago, so I need ideas! Some things I've been toying with (not all of these obvs):

Tea sandwiches (duh), like cream cheese/cucumber, pimento cheese, tofu egg salad, etc
Petit Fours that say "eat me" on them
Scones - sweet (with vegan clotted cream and jam): blueberry lavender, apple ginger, ...? and savory: cheddar, tomato rosemary
Quiche or mini-quiche
Tea (a pot of Earl Grey, plus assorted bags for individual cups)
Punch? Maybe a boozy punch (it's adults-only)

I know I'm posting this in the kitchen, but if you have any suggestions for (CHEAP) decorating ideas, then please share!

Beautiful Soup

Beautiful Soup so rich So green,
Waiting in a hot tureen
Who for such dainties would not stoop.

Soup of the evening
Beautiful Soup,
Soup of the evening,
Beautiful Soup

Beautiful Sou-oop
Beautiful Sou-oop
Soup of the evening Beautiful Sou-oop
Beautiful, Beautiful Soup.

Beautiful Soup, Who cares for fish,
Game or any other dish?
Who would not give all else for two
Pennyworth only of Beautiful Soup?

Pennyworth only of Beautiful Soup,
Beautiful Sou-oop
Beautiful Sou-oop
Soup of the evening Beautiful Sou-oop
Beautiful, Beautiful Soup.

Heart-shaped tarts decorated with raspberries would be perfect! What about some kind of tea flavoured agar-based dessert served in teacups with the teaspoon set into the jelly? What about doing something shaped like a little dormouse - fondants or chocolates or something. Is there a hedgehog involved in the Mad Hatter's tea party? Hedgehog slice is yummy.

I know playing cards are more to do with the Queen, but a few packs of cards could make really cheap bunting, & a black & red theme could tie everything together. You could also make decorations from black cardboard cut-outs of ravens. If you're serving savoury, hot food, I just had some lapsang souchong rice last week, served with marinated & chargrilled tofu. The rice has the tea theme covered, & wouldn't it be cool to cut the tofu into the shapes of the card suits, with two marinades making them red or black? And you could make (or buy) little cardboard tophats & bunny ears for your guests to wear.

Thanks for the ideas! The guests will (hopefully) be dressing up, but I like the idea of having some hats and bunny ears in case someone shows up without a costume! The party will be in the afternoon, and I don't have a lot of space, so I'm trying to stick with tea-party finger-foody stuff. I LOVE the idea of playing cards as bunting. The theme is actually both books (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass) so that will be perfect. Maybe I can pick up some red and white roses for the table?

Those are pretty amazing! I probably won't have time for anything like that, but they are cool to look at!

I haven't decided for sure on my costume, but I'm thinking Cheshire Cat. Funds are limited so I'll have to be creative with what I already have to come up with a costume :)

Perhaps some clock or time themed foods would be good? Although I have no idea what they could be. Perhaps shout 'all change' a few times during the party and have some clocks dotted around.

Spoiler: show
The Mad Hatter has a disagreement with time, so time decided it would always be teatime. This meant that the tea party never had any time to wash their tea service or do anything else besides have tea.

red and white roses, maybe black and white checkers like a chessboard tablecloth, large playing cards on the walls, maybe one corner of the room with large paper flowers?

These. Also bread and butter, as long as it's the best (i.e. vegan) butter. And libations in bottles with "drink me" labels!

Can you put foil or something around your front door or garden gate so it looks like a big mirror frame? Then all your guests would have to step through the looking glass!

I was thinking of putting one of those giant plastic "silver" trays from the dollar/craft store on my front door!

Or you could combine tarts with roses and do these rose apple tarts - recipe isn't vegan but would be easily adapted. (ETA: and I've seen a baker make them pink, presumably by painting or soaking the slices in grape juice or something like that).

i dont think i have any good ideas to share but i am inviting myself to this party as i absolutely LOVE Alice in Wonderland and this sounds like the funnest party ever! :-)

the only other thing i can think of is something with mushrooms since she eats pieces of the mushroom at a couple points to grow bigger and smaller
