It's my roomates 35th birthday today! I am super broke and couldn't afford to get him anything so instead I baked the basic chocolate cupcakes from VCTOTW. They turned out beautifully. Everything was going good, I started to make the Cookies N Cream Icing. But... As I was sifting the icing sugar into the shortening/margarine mixture I saw a bug :( A tiny little moth like bug. It was dead and I picked it out, but now I have this fear that the whole bag of icing sugar is contamintaed. What if there were more and I didn't see them? What are the chances of growing larvae inside of you after eating them?? AHHH

What would PPk do? I can't afford to just go buy more icing sugar and I don't have enough sugar or cornstrach to make my own:(

Serve them uniced? (boring)

Can't you just look and see if there are any other bugs in it? If no other bugs were visible, it was probably just a rogue bug caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

does the sugar look stringy and weird? that means lots of eggs and weird moth stuff. do you have chocolate chips or chocolate bars to make a ganache or something?

ps. moth eggs can't live in your body...

It looks totally normal! I think I will ice the cupckaes and just keep this little secret to myself. As long as I am not potentially harming anyone, I am okay wit it. I'm sure we've all injested a bug or two in our lifetime.

Thank you Fee and ijdi!!

My mind just always goes to the worst place. >.<

Ijdi is right. You are not harming anyone. And you probably sifted all the bugs out. (Especially if there are no lumps and sticky pieces.)

I would use it, then take a photo of the bugs or something and send it to the sugar company all like 'GROSS, YOU GUYS'. Then then might send you heaps of free stuff. My mum once found a dried ladybug in a jar of rosemary, so she told the company about it and they sent us a huge box filled with free herbs and spices. Like, all of the ones that they make. It was awesome.

But when your roommate asks why you're getting all this free stuff, say that you found the bugs in another bag or something.

That sounds like a pantry moth. If eating them or their eggs was dangerous I'd probably be dead by now. I know, not vegan. But I've been fighting a loosing battle to de-moth my pantry for a long time now.

One can't be dangerous, a lot off eggs or larvae eat at once can cause some strange stomach sensations (caused by food in larvae gut). However I would not use it - not because of health concern but rather aesthetic ;).

Pantry moth = EVIL! I thought that I beated them (not vegan either!) but now they are starting invasion from my neighbours! And they can invade products in grocery shop or during confection, it's not always fault of company that produced this product.
