I hope this doesn't come out wrong because I'm not trying to defend it. The difference is, I think, that 9/11 is something that is perceived to be something purely brought on from the outside, while the Irish/German/etc jokes is something "internal". It's bullshiitake of course, but I can't help but think it goes in the "it's your own fault" direction a tiny bit. Sorry if this is way off.

Hold up, you guys! I'm sorry I didn't see this until this morning! Yes, the name of the cupcake and the drink is forked up, but just because it didn't get modded until now doesn't mean that are ok with racism and that we hate Irish people, which seems to be what some people are implying.
So, to the OP who posted the cupcakes: I get that you probably used the name of the drink for your cupcake without really thinking about what it means, but it's really not ok, so please just think about what you post in the future. Just because you didn't invent the name of the drink and you know people who aren't offended by it doesn't mean you can use it freely. In general, I think if people are offended by something, it's best to apologize, or at least attempt to discuss it to figure out what happened rather than trying to justify your actions.
Now, I hope this thread can get back to talking about what everyone's baked lately because I like this thread!
Edited to add: If someone does say something offensive and it's pretty clear they weren't trying to offend anyone, maybe just try to explain it to them rather than being mean. LW, I think your initial post was pretty mean. Poopie, I think your initial reaction to it was right on.

Just to clarify for people...... we weren't accusing PPK mods of allowing racism. It is more of an "in general society" thing that we have experienced.
I appreciate how quickly this was dealt with especially since it is a Sunday morning when you should be sleeping in or eating pancakes.

The lemony cakes look amazing! I just don't want this to get lost, because it made the debate crystal-clear for me. Its not about Irishness or Germanness, as much as it is about glorifying a crime. We wouldn't find a Zyklon B cupcake or a Murderer's Delight any better. fezza wrote: So, a device designed to blow the bottom half of people's bodies off, usually outside their homes (in front of.. you know... their families and all) is an acceptable form of Northern Irish history and humour because because it's represented by a tasty, tasty cupcake?

Seriously - I can't wait to see how the panda bread turns out! I'm not sure I'd have the patience for it.

I made the Forks Over Knives Zecret Zucchini Bread, only using orange zest instead of lemon, since that's what I had. It's really good!

I've been meaning to make it again for ages. I made the peanut butter chocolate chip cookies from Whole Grain Vegan Baking. They taste like satay cookies! Which is to say, they are delicious.

But I was totally excited and going to make them after I read your post only to see they call for amaranth flour, which I don't have. I think that's going to be my frustration with this book...I only bake when I'm having a lazy stay-inside day and that also means I'm too lazy to go to the store. But to make most of these recipes I'll have to buy special ingredients/battle the rude weekend whole foods shoppers. First world problems
