Does anyone know which brands of tortillas are vegan? I’m looking for a good whole wheat or white tortilla that’s great for burritos. I know there’s the Ezekiel brand, but I find that they aren’t pliable and crack easily. It seems like all the supermarket brands (Dempsters, Stonehedge, etc.) have weird, non-vegan or questionably vegan ingredients like L-cysteine, monoglycerides, etc. What do you guys typically buy?

i had to google monoglyceride as i never really thought about it. i knew it was something to do with fat and i never thought about it's veganness.

damnit! it's hard being a vegan! i always eat generic-type tortillas :-/

have you thought about making your own? (says the lazy person who still buys them)

Honestly, I assume tortillas are vegan unless there is a reason for me to believe otherwise.

I buy Tumaro's Gourmet Tortillas. Not all of them are vegan (watch for honey!), but a lot of them are. They are nice and pliable, and have good flavor.

Yeah, I honestly never really thought about it. Then someone on a local vegan forum said they couldn't find vegan tortillas at the store because of certain ingredients. I looked into and of course my favorite brand has L-cysteine, mmmmm hair/feathers.

I believe monoglycerides are typically from vegan sources. I always consult that vegetarian resource group list when in doubt, but I try not to worry about small stuff like this.

I usually get La Banderita brand but can't vouch for their vegan purity. I think they have 8" whole wheat tortillas, but not larger ones. I always get the large burrito size white ones -- I won't claim they are the most yummy and pliable, but they work pretty well and are cheap and easy to come by.

Whole Foods or I make my own.

This makes my life easier since almost all of the tortillas in regular grocery stores here are Mission! I've been eating those at other people's houses on a don't-ask-don't-tell basis.

I find it super hard to find vegan tortillas in the store, aside from the Ezekiel ones (which I also find not very pliable and crack easily).

There's this one brand that I can only find at Loblaws (and it's probably not at all Loblaws as the company that makes them is in Southern Ontario), but I can't for the life of me remember the name and Google isn't helping.

Mission tortillas are perfectly fine. Not sure if they're available where you are, but around here (in NYC) I see them at most big supermarkets.

i will admit I'm a snob in this regards but I think Mission tortillas aren't good. Then again, I rarely buy flour tortillas, I usually buy corn.

I don't like Mission ones either. I normally get the Whole Foods brand. When I tried Mission I thought they were just wrong.

Good flour tortillas are so hard to buy. The best (non-locally produced) ones I ever bought were from TJ's, but I think at least one variety of those has honey. I can't remember.

Agreed that Mission sucks.

I like my tortillas thick, soft, and chewy. Grocery store tortillas just do not meet these criteria most of the time.

I kinda feel like Mission are the Wonder Bread of tortillas but we use 'em in a pinch. The Maria Ricardo ones are good, as are the ones we buy at TJs, but sometimes my bf wants a BIG SF-style burrito and then we end up buying the giant ones from a Latino store or supermarket and those always have the questionable ingredients like mono-glycerides.

I get corn tortillas at Trader Joe's that are pretty tasty.

Lidl's plain tortillas are vegan.

Watch out for the Wegman's brand tortillas. All except the plain ones (green label) have fish in them for some reason! Every time I look at them in the store I grumble loudly. I'm going to have to double check if the regular ones have monoglycerides though :T

Ewwww about the fish. . . but the monoglycerides are most likely vegan! (see Beanitarian's post upthread)

We don't have a Wegman's although we will in a couple months. If you every see "Omega 3's" on a package, you should check for fish, I imagine that is why the tortillas have it.
