I had big plans to make a BBQ chicken pizza tonight with mozzarella Cheezly (a rare splurge for us). However, my bf picked up mozzarella Tofutti slices. Super sad face.

Now that I'm over my grumpiness about it and the discussion about how I wrote Cheezly specifically on the list to avoid confusion (not that I'm angry), I'm wondering if I should risk it. I haven't bought Tofutti slices since I first went vegan more than six years ago. I remember them being foul.

What say you, PPK? Are they too disgusting to grace a pizza? Or should I go for it?

I like the Tofutti slices, always have. If you tear them up into smaller pieces it helps for stuff like this.

I think this sounds like a great subject for an in-depth news report.

This. I love them on veggie burgers. Actually, that's about the only place I like them, but they are perfect for that. I don't like the mozzarella; that one is kind of gross.

Personally, I would save the Tofutti for a meatball marinara sub or something, and whip up a yummy batch of tofu or cashew ricotta for the pizza. I've tried all the cheezy things and a good ricotta is hands down my favorite for pizza.

I use them for grilled cheese and on burgers. Not sure how it'd be on a pizza.

I say use one and cut it up! My brother found a super old pack of mozz. in my fridge a few years ago and used it to make eggplant parmesan and it was fine. You know, oily/melty, but okay.

In-depth vegan cheese news stories = my new life calling.

I hate them and think they're disgusting. Am I thinking of the same cheese everyone else is thinking of???

I love them in grilled cheeses and in desperation put them on pizza before (sparingly) and you know what, it was good. It may have even been a BBQ chicken pizza. tastes like junk food! also, tofutti makes the best frozen pizzas, and i assume they use their own cheese, so go for it!

I never cook with any vegan cheese on its own, but instead incorporate them into slurries or sauces, even for pizza and grilled cheese sandwiches. The additional ingredients tend to mask any flavor issues (for instance, I find Daiya shreds too sweet), and melting it together with complimentary stuff makes for a smooth, uniform texture. I'm sure this would work with chopped up Tofutti slices; in fact, I'm pretty certain I've done it. Just put a little plain unsweetened soy milk in a saucepan (more or less depending on what you're using it for) and turn the heat to low; gradually stir in your cheese and whatever seasonings you like; for pizza I'd probably add some basil, oregano, and garlic powder. Stir constantly until smooth and thick, and then apply it your pizza and proceed accordingly!

I think they're fine, provided they're melted. They make great cheeseburgers, alongside a patty. I just find them vile raw.

Hmm. I may give it a go with one of the packs. We were going to return them, but I'm not sure they'll take it back.

This needs more in-depth reporting. We need a 60Minutes segment.

I bought two packs each of Tofutti American and Mozzarella slices a couple of weeks ago. They are both disgusting - I can't decide if they're slightly sour or bitter but, whatever, they don't taste like any cheese I've ever eaten. I've tried them in many different ways and it's only with something strong like gherkins that the slices are even halfway edible.

Never having had American cheese before, I thought that perhaps it's supposed to taste like that. So I tried the mozzarella thinking it would be milder or something, but it's actually the worse of the two.

The garbage bin is the only place for what's left of the packs. That's $20.00 I will never waste again.

Me too--had a Tofutti grilled cheese for dinner. Tastes exactly like the junky American grilled cheese I never liked pregan but love now. Go figure.

Ever since I have been on this Ethiopian bender, all I want to eat is yellow Tofutti slices microwaved for 30 seconds between two slices of bread.

I love taking a Tofurkey deli slice (hickory or peppered), laying a piece of this Tofutti american cheese (either flavor) in the middle, and a pickle on top of that, then rolling it up into a wonderful hors d'oeuvre tube of nostalgia.

I like Tofutti mozarella slices better than any other vegan cheese I know.

Very interesting replies so I went and tried two slices of each again and yuk. Perhaps it's a matter of getting used to them.

I just bought a package of the American flavor the other day because I wanted non-shredded cheese and would have to drive about 45 minutes to get Daiya wedges. They are pretty gross all by themselves, but good in a grilled cheese sandwich with onion and garlic powder sprinkled into the melted EB, and then dipped in veganaise and bbq sauce. They are also good on a veggie burger with lots of other toppings, or in a sandwich with lots of other stuff. They need other strong flavors to cover up the grossness, and then they can add some nice creamy, salty, fattiness.

I've never had the Tofutti slices (nowhere around here seems to carry them), but this is exactly how I feel about Daiya shreds: nasty on their own, but nice when melted with other strongly flavored ingredients.

I think I will give them a miss from now on. If they have to be loaded up with so many other things to kill the taste then it seems pointless wasting my money on them. And I can do without the 6g of fat (3g of it saturated fat).

I can only eat these if they are melted on a tomato relish topped vegetable burger. Other than that there are far nicer vegan cheese slices out there
