I am going to a baby shower this weekend (helping prepare for it as well) and they are going to do chicken salad tea sandwiches. I need an idea for a second vegan filling that will totally wow everyone.

Needs to be with non-expensive ingredients, but that's the only criterion. Okay, GO.

there's a tempeh and asian pear sandwich filling in veganomicon that is really good or the tempeh/mango in vwav. curried chickpea salad with raisins or grapes and almonds is really delish! i think i've used a recipe from Joanna for that last one, but now I can't remember where it is, but you could base it off a curried chicken salad recipe.

I went to a tea party last year with all omnis and brought sandwiches on white vegan bread filled with Tofutti cream cheese and thinly sliced cucumber. No one knew it was vegan, since I didn't really know anyone there ahead of time and I didn't say anything, and they all got eaten up. Super easy and fairly cheap too.

I second the cucumber-Tofutti idea. And you can cut them into purdy shapes like this, look: http://veganyumyum.com/2007/03/cucumber-tea-sandwiches/

I'm having a tea party next month and I plan on making the cucumber-tofutti sandwiches and chickpea salad sandwiches too

Oooh, I second the v'con tempeh and Asian pear.

I also love the chickpea hijiki salad sandwich from VWAV, if you think people won't be too scared off by seaweed.

Honestly, once I just made pin wheel sandwiches (with wraps), with veggies/avocado, vegenaise, and a little bit of spicy mustard for a potluck, and everyone was freaking out over them. Sometimes less is more!

I like the idea of pinwheels! Our Chinese vegan place does fried veg chicken wraps with salad and a spicy mayo and avocado and they're addictive

I don't have a recipe, but a tea house here does tea sandwiches with lemon edamame spread, cucumbers, and green onions. Fancy, but still familiar ingredients.

My favorite tea sandwich is an herbed cream cheese. 1 cups of basil, 1 cups of parsley, 1/4 cup chives, 1/2 lb vegan cream cheese blended in a food processor together. Salt to taste. (How much you need depends on the brand of cream cheese.) Better if it's allowed to sit and have the flavors meld, so I make it one day, and assemble the sandwiches the next. people seriously freak out about how good it is.

Is that fresh basil and parsley, DEG? I think that sounds seriously yum... and lots of these suggestions were awesome!

Yes, that's fresh for all the herbs. That would be a crazy amount of dried! I have been making that sandwich since long before my vegan days with regular cream cheese for the annual holiday tea party my BFF and I throw. People talk about those sandwiches all year.

I haven't tried the particular sandwich combo described in the link below, but I've made this mushroom walnut pate as a dip and it is utterly delicious.

Almost everybody loves hummus, so maybe something like mini pitas stuffed with a bit of arugula and sundried tomato and basil hummus?

I just think mini pitas are adorable.

The filling from the Green Monster in the Garden sandwich from Vegan Sandwiches Save the Day is kind of chicken salad-y and definitely wonderful.

Welllll due to the flu I ended up not going to this shower. BUT, thanks to all of you I now have a whole lot of ideas I can pull out. I am tempted to do a tea party just as an excuse to try some of these.

My friend and I made chickpea salad tea sandwiches and cucumber sandwiches (mixed fresh tarragon and fresh chives into the tofutti) for our superbowl party. They went over pretty well. I also did one with a tahini spread, sliced apple and arugula. It's probably my new favorite thing.

God, me too. What is it about tiny food? It's the best. I think I love it so much because I like to taste a large variety of foods in one meal, and tiny food makes that possible. Someone write a vegan tiny food zine. I will buy that shiitake.

Absolutely! The same food tastes at least twice as good in tiny form, plus it's cute! And getting to taste a bunch of different things is the best. Most big foods can be turned into tiny foods. I mostly serve tiny foods at my parties, so I feel like I should write this zine, but I'm way to lazy, or busy, or both. But, if I did write it, the zine itself would be tiny, like maybe 4 inches tall.
