I have an end-grain hardwood butcher block that I've had for nine years. I love it. I also have some flexible plastic boards that I use to move chopped stuff to the stove.

I don't recommend using the butcher block as a trivet though, esp. not with cast iron right out of a blazing hot oven. Oops. I have a burn mark on mine that I've been meaning to sand through, but I haven't bothered.

I have some hardwood ones I inherited from my grandmother and great-grandmother. I own a plastic one for camping and use outside by the grill.

For the longest time, I had been using two cheap white ones from Ikea or Target (one large, one small). But they are starting to look permanently stained, which is grossing me out, even though I run them in the dishwasher often.

My mom bought me a recycled plastic one for Christmas (http://www.amazon.com/Architec-EcoSmart ... B002C1AVHM) that is pretty great. It is supposed to be dishwasher-safe, but I think mine warped in ours, so now I hand-wash it. It works best with a towel (wet or dry) under it (but all cutting boards do!).
