Yeah, at first I thought each polka dot was made of two hemispheres stuck together (which still requires a special pan, but a less specialist one), but then I realised the cake mould is clamped together and filled from the top.

and wondering how balls of coloured marzipan would work in cake. It would be very different, but stolen is cake with marzipan and that's good. Hmm. I suppose when you cut the slices the marzipan would squish so wouldn't get such a beautiful, clean polka dot effect, which is the whole point. I wonder if somewhere near here rents cake moulds for reasonable prices.
