I posted asking about this before, and I'm pretty sure it's not the Heidi somethingorother stuff people mentioned. It's not available in many places yet but I got mine from vegan cross.

http://www.veganicfoods.co.uk/

Straight out of the packet it's very much like that slightly crappy cheddar you can buy grated. My nibble rocketed me back to crappy school lunches where the vegetarian option was sandwiches made with that cheese. I've tried Sheese and Cheesly, and the Tesco's dairy free muck before. Redwoods was the best of the other bunch for me, but still not a stand-alone taste sensation. Daiya is not available here in the UK.

Then I tried it melted on toast. It definitely melts, very much like dairy cheese. It tastes good too, very much like the mild-dairy cheddar. It's the first vegan cheese on toast I've ever actually finished the whole slice, but it's a bit plain. Next time I'll add Worcester sauce or something. The kids liked it- the comment was 'I remember this!' (From my five year old).

We had it on pasta too for supper, and I think it will work well on pizza too.

At £5 for 500g it's not cheap but it says it lasts for months and we never did get through a lot of cheese.

I'm actually really impressed.

Did you make a cheese sauce with it or just stir it in to the dish?

I tried this on top of a baked pasta dish recently and thought it was only okay - not as good as the very similar looking grated Wilmersburger cheese (bought from Vx in London) which was lovely. Perhaps it would be better on pizza.

I made the cheese sauce with it and sprinkled it on top too with breadcrumbs. I haven't tried the wilmersburger...

I've never made a cheese sauce, I'm not much of a cook. Maybe I should try as I've got loads of it left.

I have some which I got from Vx a few weeks ago which I tried for the first time today as cheese on toast with tomato puree base and olives; it was delicious but didn't melt as well as I was hoping. Definitely the first vegan melty cheese I've really got into :)

Any other suggestions for melty cheese recipes?

Dude. I was totally disappointed with its meltability, too. From what I'd heard, I was expecting it to be amazing, but I put it on a pasta bake and it just went crispy. Melted okay in grilled cheese, but I was too scared to put it on pizza on its own in case it went crispy again and ruined my pizza, so I used it in addition to a noochy sauce and it was okay, but didn't really add anything.

Personally, I majorly favour soy free cheezly over this for pizza purposes, and it's much more readily available.

So this was my latest attempt with Veganic cheese, which was pretty awesome:

I think I've found the secret to increasing its meltability: drizzling a little olive oil over the cheese just before putting it in the oven seems to do the trick.

back when follow your heart was the only good vegan cheese in america, that was the trick to get that to melt too. :-)

Well if I was looking for a low-calorie meal I think I might not go for cheesy pizza!

As cgvegan has suggested, I wasn't looking for a low calorie meal or to lose weight; I wanted a pizza which reminded me of pregan pizza, which this one did.

This isn't about this cheese, I just want to know: is the melty Vegusto not available there? Because I loved that stuff! And it melted like a dream.

I do find Vegusto (of any kind) occasionally in Edinburgh but I haven't found a reliable source and haven't seen the melty one yet.

Haha! I'm the sort of person who'd drink a diet drink with a high calorie meal, gotta save a few calories where you can! It just pains me to have to add oil to make a cheese do what it claims it can do - I feel if it needs more oil to melt they should rework their formula. :)
