SPRING 2013 COOKBOOK CHALLENGE

This is my first time organizing a cookbook challenge so if I have left any important information out, feel free to leave a comment below! Also, if I've missed any legitimate recipe links (posted with permission from author and/or publisher) please include them below. Sorry if my post is crazy long! I think this is going to be a lot of fun!

THE COOKBOOKS AND SCHEDULE:

Monday March 25 – Sunday March 31: Disappointed that one of your much loved and/or under-used cookbooks did not get chosen for our challenge? Show us how crazy wrong we were not to vote for it! Your choice of cookbook!

Monday April 1 – Sunday April 14: your choice of any Isa/Terry cookbook(s)

Monday April 15 – Sunday April 28: Vegan Diner by Julie Hasson

Monday April 29 – Sunday May 12: Chloe’s Kitchen (+ baking book)

Monday May 13 – Sunday May 26: Cookin’ Crunk by Bianca Philips

Monday May 27 – Sunday June 9: Vegan Eats World by Terry Hope Romero

Monday June 10 – Sunday June 23: Vegan Sandwiches Save the Day by Tami and Celine

Monday June 24 – Sunday July 7: Let Them Eat Vegan by Dreena Burton

WHAT TO DO DURING A TWO-WEEK COOKBOOK CHALLENGE: Choose 6 (or more or less depending on your schedule) recipes from the selected cookbook during each 2-week challenge period. Come back to the appropriate discussion post and tell us all about what you made and post photos** if you can!

If for whatever reason you do the cookbook(s) in a different order, please save your comments and photos and post in the appropriate cookbook challenge discussion thread.

DISCUSSION THREADS: The day before each cookbook challenge, I will create a new discussion thread for said book. If you don’t own the cookbook or weren’t able to check it out of your library, try using some of the free online recipe resources! (see below)

**SHARING YOUR FOOD PHOTOS ON PPK: Because we cannot upload our food photos directly to PPK, we have to upload our photos to a hosting site such as your blog, flickr, photobucket, etc….)
Quick how-to for inserting your food photos into your PPK comment:
Make sure to click “full editor” at the bottom of the comment box.
Type whatever text your want, and then, wherever you want your photo to be, click “img” and now you should see "[img][\img]" (without the quotes) in your post.
If your photo is on your blog, you can simply right click your photo from your post and “copy image URL.” Then click your mouse between the "[img][\img]" code and then press paste. It should look something like this: "[img]yourfoodphoto.jpg[\img]"
Sometimes after I hit the post comment button, I get an “alert” that my photo is too big and I can’t publish my comment with said photo. So then I type “?w=700&h=500” (without the quotes) after the .jpg extension and it magically makes it an acceptable size! You can experiment with other numbers too.
If you use flickr, after you upload your photo, click the photo in your photostream to view it. Then click “actions” and “view all sizes.” “Medium 500” will work well so right click your photo, copy the image URL, and paste it between the "[img][\img]" code just like above.
Photobucket.com is another free photo sharing site but I am not familiar with it. I’m sure the process to share your uploaded photobucket photo’s to the PPK is quite similar to the 2 examples from above.

ONLINE RESOURCES
Besides the online resources, don’t forget to check your local library and see if they have any of the cookbooks. If they don’t, see if they participate in inter-library loaning with other libraries in your state. Or, spread the vegan gospel and request that your library purchase said book(s) for you and other patrons! If you have an e-reader like a nook or kindle you may be able to borrow e-books from your library so check with your local library about that.

Excellent list, thanks for gathering all the details!

Six is probably too many recipes for me to do each time, but I will definitely be participating in most of these. Yay!

You are so awesome. I don't have the first 3 official books, so I will definitely be hitting up those links.

Also, I totally just wrote down each title at the beginning of it's week in my planner. I'm not a dork or anything.

I just did my meal plan for next week! I'm using World Vegan Feast, just because I need to use it more. I'm double challenging myself by also trying to mostly only cook things my guy will like. We enjoy eating/cooking together, but he is sadly opposed to most vegetables, tofu, tempeh, and seitan. That means lots of beans and lentils and very few or only certain veggies, or recipes where I can add in the veggies at the end, separately. We'll see how long I last cooking like that, since I love veggies/tofu/tempeh/seitan. I'll probably do at least one that only I will be eating. Oh, also, I'm on a major food budget, so challenging times three!

Anyway, I'm pretty pumped for my week. Egyptian beans, Kibbeh, and a sweet potato chowder. Yes, please!

Sitting down with Vegan With a Vengeance doing out my shopping list. Going to try get all I need tomorrow since I will be near a good hfs. Also going to try tempeh out for the first time since I will be able to get it tomorrow. Exciting times!

So far I have a dinner, breakfast and lunch sorted that includes 4 different recipes that I haven't made before and that food should give me 3 or 4 days worth of food. Going to see if I can get my oven sorted early next week so I can bake something later in the week.

If you're doing tempeh for the first time, I highly recommend that you go with the rueben from that book! It changed my view on tempeh forever (in a good way)!

Thanks. I would but it would push my shopping budget up a bit too much unfortunately. There are a few things on it that I don't have to hand.

Oooh, now I have to decide which Isa/Terry book to do for the free week. I always end up looking to AFR because it's so lovely, but maybe I should try something else. It's been a while since I tried something new from VWAV, so maybe that....

We can be dorks together because I totally labeled my calendar too, old school style, on paper! Also, I menu plan for one to two weeks at a time and post the menu (on notebook paper) on the fridge, which is a bit silly since it's just me and my hubby but I like having it there. I'm already thinking of ways to decorate my notebook paper for this festive cookbook challenge occasion!

I'm the same. I always end up using AFR because everything is so darn tasty. I've only made a few things from VWAV so that is why I am doing that the first week then on the open Isa/Terry one I will use VB since I have barely used that too. Hopefully the oven will be sorted with a working oven by that one so I can eat muffins non-stop for 2 weeks.

P.S. I'm glad everyone is excited about this! YAY! If we all met in person we could dance like Bill Cosby to show our dorky cookbook challenge excitement! I ♥ to dance like Bill Cosby, mostly because I can't really dance any other way ;)
