I just got given a bunch of homebrew equipment by a friend and I really fancy making some vegan mead!

Has anyone done this/got any good recipes please?

VeganCrunk has done agave mead!

Meadlike things are super simple to ferment; just some sweetener, water, yeast (I've had good experiences with Lalvin EC-1118 for fortified cider), and patience. You could really use any combination of (non-artificial) sweeteners, but I imagine things like brown rice syrup or maple would add very strong flavours—not necessarily what you'd want. I'd recommend experimenting with ingredients and ratios in little growlers or cider bottles before trying a whole 23-litre batch.

Start by making gallons and half gallons that way your loss is a little easier to bear if you don't like the results. Champagne yeast will rip through about anything you throw at it. I would highly recommend using yeast energizer as well as a yeast nutrient as these types of juices (not sure this is technically considered must or not) typically do not contain much for yeast nutrients. Don't be afraid to double up on yeast nutrient, starving yeast produces a lot of sulphur dioxide which will be discernable to your nose at drinking time. If you do get sulphur on the nose let it sit in the secondary for an extended period and it may disipate.

I thought I remembered a recipe called Unicorn Tears Mead from here a few years ago. Just did a search and I found it! http://forum.theppk.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=13113&hilit=unicorn+tears

I've been wanting to try this out too; if you do let us know how it is!!

eta: meant to say scroll down pretty far to get to the actual recipe :)

Yes, I thought of Bianca right away! I never tasted hers, but I am also friends with Leslie (the one she mentions in her post who took the mead-making class) so if I have any specific questions I'd be glad to ask her and see if she remembers!

If you use agave, isn't that technically a sort of mescal or pulque or something?

yeah, you probably need to add a bit of other sugars, since the agave might be too much fructose.

here's the makeup of an average honey. (although there is a lot of variation)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honey#Nutrition

Fructose: 38.2%
Glucose: 31.3%
Maltose: 7.1%
Sucrose: 1.3%
Water: 17.2%
Higher sugars: 1.5%
Ash: 0.2%
Other/undetermined: 3.2%

Honey has a density of about 1.36 kilograms per litre (36% denser than water).[45]

Great advice, thank you :) I have a couple of 1 gallon demijohns as well as a large fermentating bin so I guess I'll start with the demijohns and see where I go from there.
