I've never liked cabbage but know it's good for me (and cheap). I discovered that I don't mind raw cabbage so I've been adding it to my salads. I started buying bagged cole slaw but decided to buy two whole cabbages and cut up what I need at the time.

Do whole cabbages need to be washed or is it already? I can't slice them and wash after because it would be hard to dry (falls through the salad spinner). I don't want to take the leaves apart and wash them separately, that would make chopping harder.

What do you do?

If it's like a regular red or white cabbage, I just wash the outside because the leaves are really... tight? I don't know how to explain it... anyway, I feel like the insides are probably pretty clean. With looser leaved varieties, I wash inside the outer leaves a little bit more, but I don't get too fanatical about it. As long as there's no visible dirt, I think you're safe.

I throw out the top layer altogether, do a rough chop and put it through the salad spinner. Then I store it in green bags and if I need a finer chop for a slaw or something, I do that additional chop when needed.

I toss the outer leaves and put all the inner leaves in a colander, give them a good rinse and spin them dry.

Honestly, I usually just buy slaw mix as I find whole cabbages more trouble than they're worth.

I peel off outer leaves if they are shriveled or limp, rinse off the whole cabbage under running water to get it wet. then rub it with a firm vegetable scrubbing brush. I peel and open it up and then I do the same with about the next couple layers. I don't worry about the very inside or the core of it.

I just discovered the salad spinner, so i will probably start using that in some fashion. However I generally don't clean my cabbage, unless there's dirt on the outer leaves. I feel like it's so tight you don't need to.

I chop it, rinse it in the colander and pat it dry with a clean cloth. I also usually dress it as a slaw or cook it right away and then it doesn't need to be super dry for storage. I buy all my produce at the farmer's market and I notice aphids or grit on the interior from time to time.

Remove the top two layers and don't wash the rest. Of course, I don't hardly ever eat cabbage raw so if there is some e coli or anything hiding out in there I am relying on the cooking to take care of it for me.

Yeah, I just remove leaves until I don't see dirt anymore and then use as is. (But, truth be told, I'm pretty terrible about washing veggies.)
