I'm going to my aunt and uncle's house for the big extended family feast on Thursday. Any ideas for a dish that would transport an hour drive well, work as a yummy vegan side but would be hearty enough to be my and my husband's main dish? A few in the family are sort of foodies, most are meat, bread, and potatoes country folk (in the best way; my grandma's a great cook in that style), and almost everyone has semi-adventurous palate, though I think I'd like to steer away from tofu and products that try to mimic a certain animal product like Tofurkey or faux cheese. It's my first big family get together since I veganized, and I'm feeling some pressure to cook well. (I will probably make the chocolate chip pumpkin cupcakes from VCTOW, too.)

Ideas?

the caramelized onion butternut roast with chestnuts in the Veganomicon was what I did in a similar situation, it is traditionally and fantastic. You might want to double anything you do so you have enough to eat and share.

I am going to keep an eye on this thread - I also have a big omni potluck this week and have no idea what to bring.

That sounds perfect! Lots of harvest/holiday ingredients, adventurous but not weird. Although I would totally love stuffed mushrooms or a leek cassoulet. Yum, yum, yum.
