I am having one of those murder mystery parties and it has a French 1940's theme to it. Before going vegan I wouldn't have had an issue with figuring out foods, but now I am not so sure. It needs to be a full four course sit down meal so I need some ideas for foods that won't be too weird for my omni friends but yet still be elegant. I don't mind if we venture into vegetarian, however I would like majority of the meal to be vegan if possible.

I need ideas for three hors d’oeuvres, a cocktail, a main dish and one side.

I was thinking tomato soup would be good for first course, a green bean side dish (easy and goes with anything) and a lemon lavender cake for dessert.

Sorry to be captain obvious, but ratatouille? It'd be fun to do a cocktail with lavender. And maybe fingerling potatoes provencal? Like this kind of thing: http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/pr ... _potatoes/

Pissaladière could be good for a starter? http://www.parisvegan.com/2012/05/pissaladiere.html And how about seitan and/or mushroom bourguignon for the main?

Quiche! Or you could do mini quiches for appetizers. I know I've linked to these a million times on this board, but they really are stellar.

Mais oui! Or how about a rustic white bean and mushroom stew with crusty bread?

Carrot salad as a starter, a good French onion soup and perhaps a baked brie or something. Ratatouille, as suggested above, is a lovely idea and "inherently" vegetarian, so no one could really complain? I love the idea of a mushroom bourgignon.

Kir royale is always good, for a cocktail.

Isa has a recipe for vegan bouillabaisse with bread and creamy rouille spread on the blog: http://www.theppk.com/2013/02/bouillaba ... chickpeas/

Some type of savory (or sweet) tarte tatin would also be cool.

Yes, check out the new issue of VegNews! The french section is by Miyoko Schinner. I haven't tried anything yet, but the eclairs look heavenly. The other recipes are for crepes, Boeuf Bourguignon, mushroom puff pastries, and seafood bouillabaisse.
For a easy appetizer you can use Pepperidge Farm puff pastry sheets. Maybe with caramelized onion and other tasty fillings.

French lentil soup or salad. Vichyssoise could be easily veganized. Stuffed mushroom caps. Crepes as appetizers, main course, or dessert! Ratatatouili makes a great side or crepe filling. Casoulette! from Vcon: chick pea cutlets with mustard and/or red wine sauce; scalloped potatoes; Escarole with white beans and capers; Roasted fennel and hazelnut salad with shallot dressing; Portabello salad with spicy mustard dressing; broccoli millet croquettes; walnut mushroom pate; apple galettes (with your favorite vegan vanilla ice cream or a whipped coconut topping). Green beans almondine. Asparagus with white bean sauce. (lots of this stuff can be a crepe filling or saucy topping if you want to do crepes)

Oh, my goodness - I just remembered this unbelievable confit some friends served us for lunch recently. We also had pissaladière with pesto and olives, and some very fresh zucchini sautéed with garlic and tarragon. Amazing. (And now I have to make this ASAP!)
