I saw hemp tofu at Whole Foods the other day. It doesn't have any soy, just hemp. Has anyone tried it?

ok, so I've since been googling around, and apparently WF also sells a peanut "tofu."

Here's a recipe for hemp tofu, if you're interested in how it's made. http://mammituokkonen.blogspot.nl/2009/05/hefu.html

I've had peanut tofu a few times; it's very good but quite stodgy.

I've had hemp/lupin tofu sausages and I was really not impressed with the flavour or texture, but that might just have been that brand.

Okay, I can review this!

I found the hemp tofu at WF the other day. It'd made by Tempt, and it comes in three flavors: plain, Mexican chorizo, and Chili lime. I bought the Mexican kind and told my hubby to make something with it (he was excited and intrigued by the hemp tofu).

He threw it in our cast-iron skillet to make a scramble. The tofu almost instantly turned insanely crumbly and grainy. Like, little tiny tofu granules were flaking off the cubes he had sliced. When all was said and done, he had misshapen tofu cubes and a whole lot of itty bitty tofu granules. He also said the tofu stuck horribly to the pan.

All in all, it was a bit of a letdown. The flavor didn't knock him over, it was hard to cook, and it was way pricier than soy tofu. We're glad we experimented but we probably won't bother with this again.

I'm glad you started this thread, I saw this at WF the other day but couldn't remember what brand it was! The texture did look off-putting to me in the package, squashy and wet, so I didn't pick it up. I am curious if there are dishes that it might lend itself well to, though.

It works well enough in croquettes or burgers that usually call for tofu. I don't know what it costs at whole foods but it's so easy to make, you should probably just make it yourself if you're trying to save money and have a blender.
