 Post subject: Subbing for tomato paste?

I'd love to make the Roasted Red Pepper Mac & Cheese from Isa Does It. Trouble is I am allergic to tomatoes. Usually I just avoid recipes with tomato because there's no real substitute, but it's only one tablespoon of tomato paste and this recipe is so tempting... any ideas?

The tomato paste might thicken the sauce very slightly, but it looks like there is plenty of flavor without it. You might add a bit more roasted red pepper, or reduce the broth slightly, but probably neither is necessary.

Awesome, thanks! I was just thinking that I might add some lemon juice to replace the acidity of the tomato, and also because I add lemon juice to everything. :P I'll probably try it later this week and report back...

I would purée some pepper to make up the amount, but it probably won't matter too much. I love this recipe--one of my favorites from IDI. I think the tomato paste adds color as much as anything else, so not too vital.

I leave paste out if things all the time when an run out of frozen tbsps of it and I don't think it ever makes much difference.

I think tomato paste is also a salty seasoning, so maybe miso could be a sub?

Miso might be interesting, I may try adding some if it seems to be lacking umami.

While I'm here, any suggestions for what might be a good veggie to serve alongside this? I usually go with broccoli or kale with mac & cheese but I'm feeling slightly experimental, I'm thinking about roasted cauliflower maybe.

It's never occurred to me to eat veggies with this.

I think any veggies that are tasty on a pizza would be good mixed in.

Yeah, probably not. The texture was just weird. Yes, I tried it. Note that I did say "veggies!" (Those veggie hot dogs were good in it though)

I think it would be a good idea to ad a bit of lemon juice and a tiny bit miso, but you would probably be fine just leaving it out.
Re veggies: How about roasted brussels sprouts like Isa suggest in the video?
Roasted cauliflower sounds really good too though, especially if you bread them lightly.

Look for Turkish mild/sweet red pepper paste. It would probably be a great substitute for all your tomato paste woes!

wow, I've never tried that stuff or even heard of it before but I think I'm already in love with it. Do you know if it can it be found in stores? It sounds like something I could eat by the spoonful... :P

Your best bet to find the red pepper paste would be at a Middle Eastern store or an international grocer that sells Middle Eastern foods. I found mine in Houston at Phoenicia. I found it in Toronto at a Turkish grocer and an international grocer, too (Sunny's).

I hope you find it. It used to sit neglected in my fridge until red peppers were super expensive here in the US, so I oftentimes sub the red pepper paste depending on the recipe.

I made it and it was great! I added extra roasted pepper, and some hot sauce. Ok, a lot of hot sauce. And I served it with kale mixed in and roasted cauliflower on the side, which was perfect. Hurrah!

My MIL bought it at one of the big European grocery places in Toronto, I can ask which exactly if you'd like. I think it may be Hungarian in origin. Might be worth checking out little ethnic delis.

I used it tonight in my jambalaya, and I think it added nicely to the flavour.
