I tried a sponge and windex, no joy.

Any ideas?

What is your countertop made of?

Have you tried delving in to the dark arts?

I'd start by giving a good scrub with a scourer (the rough side of a double sided washing-up sponge if you have those?) and almost-neat washing-up liquid. If that doesn't work the internet informs me that bleach or an anti bacterial spray might, or a magic eraser, but the latter may take away the shine of your surface a bit, so test somewhere inconspicuous.

This is also a good suggestion. Or you could cover them with a large breadbin.

Go out and buy a container of Comet or Ajax powder (super cheap!), and make sure it contains bleach. Dampen the area of your countertop with water, generously coat it with the Comet/Ajax, and cover it with a paper towel. Let it sit for 15 minutes or so, then wipe and rinse. I've stained my countertop and sink so many times and this always works for me!

Truthfully, if you have straight-up bleach you can try just soaking a paper towel in the bleach and setting it on top of the stain for a while then rinsing... that might work too and save you from spending $0.80 on cleaning powder. :-)

We have laminate and I use chlorine bleach to get out crazy stains like turmeric or beets. I do a 10% solution in a spray bottle.

My sweetheart has been taking over the cooking duties lately and makes an ace tofu scramble but was surprised to see how stubbornly turmeric stains our butcher block.

Turmeric is yellow and full of terrors.

Ha. It turned the bottom of my blender such a pretty shade of yellow.

Bon Ami is really good for stuff like this. I haven't had much luck with magic erasers on turmeric for some reason.

Sledge hammer or power saw. Although I'm willing to try the comet/ajax suggestion, as I have not done that yet.

I use the excuse that I will remodel my kitchen someday to justify not even trying to remedy shiitake like this. Also clean and lube my bike chain in the living room though.

Don't fight it. Embrace it. Stain the entire counter top with turmeric, and then it won't stand out. If people ask, just say it's avant-garde.

I've used the Magic Erasers on it. It makes me sound like such a soccer mom. shiitake works.

Baking soda always does the trick for me! Make a thick paste, let it sit on the stain for a bit, then scrub it away.

I got something similar to Bon Ami called "Bartenders Friend" -- a scouring powder. That did the trick.
