I've searched the forum but can't find a topic that relates to this.

Ok so, you know when you have a load of one type of food that needs using up? Or you bought something that looked interesting but have no idea what to make with it? Can this thread be a place where we can ask those questions? Mostly because I do stuff like this all the time but don't want to clog the boards up with a new thread every time I have a question.

Anyways! I'll start.......

What can I make with rose syrup? I bought a bottle of it because it looked fancy but I have no recipes that call for it. Suggestions? Thanks PPKers!

Rose syrup is nice in a fruit salad, sweet aromatic fruits (like white grapes, lychees, peaches) go really well with it.
It's also good in puddings and sweet sauces.
And I like a little rose syrup mixed with white wine.

Awesome, thanks for the advice. Never thought of putting it in wine :)

There is a recipe in V'con for rose water pistachio cookies. They are soft and delightful. One of the baklava recipes in VEW calls for rose water.

I am intrigued by both the fruit salad and wine ideas; and since I've owned the same bottle of rose water for several years now, I might as well try both!

I find myself using rose water more than rose syrup, but it's still nice to have the syrup on hand. Of course you can make a refreshing pink rose drink with syrup, water/seltzer, and ice, but some other things you can make are: rose lemonade, rose iced tea, rose iced plant milk, turkish delights, agar jellies, falooda, or a topping for milky desserts like rice pudding.

I've never had rose syrup, but I bet it would be nice in a lassi-type drink (if you can find or make some decent vegan yogurt).

While I'm here... Any ideas for umeboshi paste, aside from the obvious (i.e. sushi)?

All these suggestions are brilliant, I can't wait to make some rose agar jellies and a lassi.

I have one! Blueberries. What can I do with a whole lotta fresh blueberries that doesn't involve muffins or pie?

Blueberry chia jam!

Yes, blueberry jam is the best. There's a recipe in the Ball cookbook that has lime in it, and the tartness is wonderful! Also, blueberry grunts! And blueberry ice cream!

I want to try this lentil-blueberry salad with balsamic-mustard dressing. The recipe is in Dutch, but you can tell the ingredients from the picture or use Google translate. http://www.ah.nl/allerhande/recept/R-R1 ... blauwe-bes

Most of a container of sour cream? Left to my own devices I don't buy it, but my mom got it and I have no idea what one does with most dairy substitutes.

You can bake with it. I've veganized these cookies before with leftover sour cream and they turned out well. Sour cream coffee cake is also common, but I don't have a specific recipe to recommend.

This might sound weird, but I like a little olive oil and umeboshi paste on baked potatoes.

For the rose syrup, I would totally use it in a vegan version of finer jumbals - I've made these using flax eggs/EB a few times. They were especially fun to make for my younger niece's Shakespearean debut! Who's a dorky auntie who likes theme desserts? Spoiler alert: it's me.

http://belleejonespierce.wordpress.com/ ... s-jumbals/

There are also some Persian cookies and baklava that use rose water, I think rose syrup would work fine.

For the blueberries, grunts all the way. My omni family is nuts for blueberry grunt and I basically made it for every family gathering for years until I started to worry they'd get tired of it. (They never did, in point.)

I'm also a fan of blueberry ginger scones, but that might tread too closely to muffin territory.

Grapefruit...other than just eating it, are there any nice recipes that anyone can suggest involving this?

I accidentally bought whole yellow peas at the store. I was in a hurry and I thought they were chickpeas and I didn't check the bag. What can I do with these? Google isn't turning up a whole lot of options. Thanks!

I make some real low-brow, recipe-less hollandaise with Tofutti Sour Cream. Melt a tablespoon or so of Earth Balance into a saucepan, then throw in a couple tablespoons of the sour cream. Put in some turmeric for color, pinch of salt.

Bake some tofu slices and put it on toasted english muffins (with or without some kinda veg ham or tofurky underneath), baby spinach, and spoon the sauce over it. I sprinkle on pepper or smoked paprika because it seems fancier that way.

You can use them in place of lentils in currys and dal.

1/3 cup coconut milk? Most recipes call for a cup or a can's worth. And the stuff is too pricey to waste in a smoothie.

I've got IDI, OSG, Vcon, Chef Chloe, Vegan on the Cheap, Fresh from the vegan slow cooker, and AFR.

Make half a recipe that calls for a cup and add a little more water? (or just make the whole recipe and do the same) Many recipes taste fine with broth instead of coconut milk.
