@couroupita, no, that's fine! i love to help, i'm glad my pics were useful for you. <3

@bekki, if they were printed on a laserjet, they wouldn't have bled when wet. kinkos and stuff should have a laserjet if you want to print them again.

Mine are currently in little plastic bins in the cupboard. Pull out the bins and shuffle for what I am looking for.

Goddamn. I was just looking at my insane tiny disorganized flooded kitchen with probably over 200 different spices (some repeats, of course), nearly bursting into tears when I remembered supercarrot's spice rack.

I need to find a good solution for small kitchen spaces while I'm in this apartment. So far no luck tho :/

Yeah, we don't even have cupboards that'll fit door racks. And our biggest cupboards are deep, not tall, and I'm not tall enough to see in them so spices will get lost and bug-infested in no time.

I'm thinking of building a spice pantry and plopping it in the middle of our living room. Turmeric-coloured carpets be damned.

Got this book Eco Craft by Susan Wasinger from the library, and she takes a bunch of old jars, paints the lids a uniform color, and uses masking tape and black chalkboard paint to paint little squares right on the glass. You can then label things with chalk. They look really classy too.

I have to save up jars. I ended up recycling a bunch of old jars when I moved, but now that I have a purpose for them, I'll have to start collecting them again.

Supercarrot, your spice rack has been totally inspiring. I've showed my boyfriend those pictures about 800 times and we just bought two of them to put over the stove, setting ourselves up with room to grow.

Since we moved in, our office has been filled with boxes but our kitchen has been forming into a work of art. By next week we should be done with our pantry, and I will share pics!!

If I was starting over, though, I would do this organization method I saw on Mofo from In the Mood For Noodles. It is the smartest idea I have ever seen: everything is filed in a roladex like index in bags. You would never buy too much of one spice in the bulk department that you don't have room for it in the jar, you can keep them out of the light, you can find them easy, and they don't take any space. I love it.

I love this, but would the flavors of various spices get mixed up through the bags?

Love love love love LOVE!

Mine are all in mason jars, scattered in mayhem across my kitchen counters.

i would think the same thing.
i have overflow in baggies (mostly from penzeys) in my basement pantry, and the box i have them sealed in lets a puff of crazy sweet/savory melange whenever i open it up. (i'm definitely going to separate sweet from savory one of these days when i get up off my lazy asparagus)

I finally have a spice solution I'm happy with-spice cabinet! ..Right by the kitchen, also houses cookbooks.

I still have misc. spices elsewhere, but I'm still gathering Penzey's spices for the cabinet. I have a shelf for the large bottles, and one for smaller.

I'm reviving this because I just moved into a place with no good spice storage location, and I remembered a thread from a while back with an amazing, enviable wall o'spices. I hunted this thread down, and then found supercarrot's spice racks on amazon. I just ordered two of them (I'll probably need two more), and I'm SO excited!

People...the supercarrot super famous spice rack is on sale for way cheap on Amazon, with prime shipping; http://www.amazon.com/Prodyne-M-912-Sta ... B000KFUEG0 ! I'm tempted for sure. Right now, we have a spice drawer full of small square tins that are labeled and alphabetized; it works great but it's not a thing of beauty like this!

I wish I could have a rack like that in my kitchen, but alas, no empty walls. I do, however, have a crazy amount of cupboard space and have a large cupboard designated to my spices. Round glass jars on the bottom right, square tins on the bottom left. Whole spices on the middle right, bigger tubs on the middle left. Top shelf is all overflow with bulk stuff. I actually really love the way it's set up, and I finally have enough room to add more if I need to!

Here's ours:
Image

I bought the tins, epoxied magnets (the rare earth kind that are superstrong) to the back and dipped the lids in chalkboard paint. It works great. AutumnVegan did this project first and I copied since it was such a good idea.

We bought and assembled extra tins for more spices which is a good thing since we've added several spices since this photo was taken.
