Now that I will no longer bring my brother's famous cream cheese based olive spread to any functions I need a new something or other! No! I will not make it with fakey cream cheese... I just need a new idea that is vegan and yummy! I was thinking of bringing a bean dip kind of thing but that might be too boring. I will be at a party where the hostess "does not know how to make vegetarian food" (duh) and there will be lots of omnivores... my vegetarian husband and me... rejecter of foods of animal. Thanks.

I suggest a spinach/artichoke dip. I use Pamela's recipe, which has fakey ingrediants but tastes great. You could maybe try swapping some of the sour cream/cream cheese for smashed white beans.

Not the right season, but the spinach-asparagus dip in Vcon is the best. No fake things, and it gets gobbled up immediately by everyone. Maybe it can be done with frozen asparagus too?

Another option is to make hummus with a twist. Two that have always been ahit for me are curry hummus and almond red pepper hummus. Both are in ED&BV.

Also, the roasted eggplant hummus in Yellow Rose Recipes never fails to please.

Either bean should be fine, but bigger ones are probably earlier to mash. I've never made Pamela's recipe but I loooove spinach artichoke dip in general, and it's always a good party thing.

I second black bean hummus. I make it the same way I'd make regular hummus, but use black beans instead of chickpeas. People like it a lot; it's different from plain old bean dip.

I made it using canned artichokes instead of asparagus once. It started as an accidental misreading of ingredients, but ended up really really yummy.

If you're looking for a bean dip that is a little different, there is this amazing baked bean dip in La Dolce Vegan. I made it and shared it with my coworkers, who descended on it like ravenous vultures.

7-layer dips are always a hit as well, if you don't want to use any sort of dairy substitute you can just do refried beans, lettuce, tomatoes, olives, jalapenos, the list could go on forever. Basically anything you would put in a taco or burrito in a layered dip form.

I've been obsessing over a fake bacon dip i created. My omni partner likes it, too. I throw a can of canellini beans in the food processor with a bit of liquid smoke, maple syrup, facon bits, garlic and onion powder, and a touch of olive or hazelnut oil. It's terribly addictive.
