I picked up a kilo of broad beans at a road side fruit and veg stall yesterday, and I am ashamed to say, I can count the number of times I have cooked with them on one hand. Please give me some of your favourite delicious recipes that incorporate these suckers!

You have me SO mad. I've been trying to get my hands on some broad beans to make foul mudammas for several months now. No luck.

I thought fava beans were hard to find here -- I've only found them on this one website in gigantic (albeit cheap) tins. You could try ful medames with a different sort of bean -- fava beans are a little tough on the outside, but mushy in the inside (and taste kind of like pinto x garbanzo) and don't quite fall apart the way, say, pinto beans or black-eyed peas do. Maybe try a version with white beans? I'd say kidney beans, but their flavour is a bit too strong, I think. I saw a recipe on-line that used edamame beans and pureed everything at the end (similar to my crabby ful medames recipe). Not the same, I know, but if you can't find them, maybe a white-bean version (or even kind-of-mashed garbanzos) is the next best thing!

I was thinking about trying it w/ white beans. Work with what you got, right? I can buy cans of foul here but they are seriously like 5 or 6 bucks. I'd rather get a pound or so dry.

I'd rather get a pound or so dry. Holy smokes! 5 or 6 bucks is pretty damn steep!! I can't find them dry here and only managed to find them tinned at an on-line overstock store -- 2.6 kg for £1.29. I bought 8 tins recently because I know that shop is going to run out of them and I will be fava-bean-less again. My husband jokes that I am stocking up for Y2K, but he loves the foul medames. (only 6 tins left.) (BTW, I drove through AZ a few times and LOVED it.)

It's so funny you made this post because just today on the Cooking Channel, Jamie Oliver made some stuff with broad beans on his show! He made some good looking stuff...Broad bean and pea smash on toast, and a broad bean patti thingy that was a lot like falafal. I can never find fresh broad beans to cook with :( Are canned ones any good?

I buy them in a medium sized can for $2 each. Only one brand sells them and they're the most expensive bean in the store. So worth it though.

I can never find fresh broad beans to cook with :( Are canned ones any good? You know what? I accidentally lied. I can't find dry broad beans, but fresh or frozen (green) ones are usually available. The green ones are just so different from when they are brown (like edamame beans v soy beans -- same thing, edamames are just younger), I don't think of them as the same. ;p The canned ones I have are good -- they don't taste tinny or anything. Regarding broad bean patti falafel things...I read Egyptians make their falafels with broad beans and not chick peas.

There is a lot of vegan Egyptian food out there (I've learned since discovering Ful Medames) because the Copts (a religious group) eat vegan as part of their fast for, like, 2/3 of the year!! And all their food seems pretty good.

The boy (who's never really had broad beans before and said they were weird when he ate them raw) exclaimed after eating it "I LOVE BROAD BEANS!!" So thankyou!! I'll have to look into the Egyptian food more too...I was unaware there was so much!
