I guess they're quick cook? They're ready in like ten minutes. Can I use them as "quick cooking oatmeal" for cookies in VCIYCJ?

hmm i would think they would be okay as a substitute. quick cooking oats are just rolled oats that have been cut into tiny pieces..steel cut oats are pretty small in size. i would say try it!

You might end up with hard crunchy bits of oats. Ten minutes does seem quick cooking by steel cut oat standards, but quick cook oats are flakes that cook in like 1-3 minutes. I dunno. But I'm all for you experimenting and telling us the results!

I would not sub steel cut oats for rolled oats of any cooking time in cookies. They are very different. I'd imagine you'd end up with crunchy oat nubs throughout your cookie.

I wouldn't do it either. I soak steel cut oats overnight before cooking them in the morning and even then, it takes about 15 minutes for them to get tender. Unless you want little pellets of hardness in your cookies, I'd avoid it.

quick oats only takes like 2-3 minutes.
But I love eating raw cookie dough, even the oatmeal kind, so maybe.

so, does anyone put anything crazy in their oatmeal in the mornings? I like cinnamon and cayenne, and dried fruit, but I'm kind of in a flavor rut.

I dropped off my dog at my ex's house the other morning for him to watch her for me and he had a bowl of oatmeal on the counter. It was just oatmeal and tabasco. He also likes to put mustard in it. Gross.

I've never bought those before. Am I the only one that thinks that "Steel Cut Oats" sounds like something they would serve in the communist re-education camps?

No, I believe they would serve "gruel." And Mark Bittman wrote an article in the NY Times a while ago about savory oatmeal. I think he put soy sauce, scallions, and some ginger in his oatmeal. I've also heard of people who put tahini or miso in theirs.

I might have to go out and get some scallions tho, that sounds like a good addition

i've never put nooch in oatmeal, but i have made oatmeal with soy cheese, corn, & salt. lots of times, in fact.
it still sounds gross to me when i describe it, & yet it is so tasty.

I am totally in love with steel cut oats, having been turned onto them by my VBF during our last visit. I eat them almost every day with sliced up fruit (pears, my fave), a little granola and some soy or almond milk. YUM!
Cookie ingredient sub? Nah, they'll never cook. You could break a tooth.
IF you were hard pressed to sub them, I'd pre-cook them.
