where can I post a question about brussel sprouts? I wanted to make them roasted for the first time, but as I'm washing them I'm noticing that they are covered with blackish looking stuff, my suspicion is bugs. Cept it doesn't wash off. I got these from the farmer's market, and they were still attached to the stalk. Nice adn fresh, but buggy? I'll postpone using them until tomorrow, so that someone can answer my ??

This was off of the facebook page, thought maybe I would get more help here. Seriously, I don't want these sprouts to go to waste, but I'm very concerned about the icky stuff that I see on them. Little whitish buggy type stuff. I think it's probably normal, but it's all down in the leaves of the sprouts. What gives?

Can you show us a picture?
Does the black stuff go away if you remove the outer leaves?

I second the picture suggestion. Otherwise, I'd say pull the outside leaves off and/or cut off the black spots if you can. I've eaten brussels sprouts with a few black spots on them before, and I'm fine.

I've got a bunch of brussel sprouts right now from my farmer's market that is covered in the black dots as well. I just peel off the outer leaves and cut off any black spots that are inside the sprouts. I don't think they're bugs. I'm not sure what exactly they are but I'm still eatin' them ..(after they are roasted to a crispy toasty perfection of course :))

My guesses are, in this order: powdery mildew, leaf spot, mosaic virus. Not harmful at all to eat, but an annoyance in the garden -- those diseases stunt plant growth and can make the sprouts all weird-looking, odd-leaved and small. Just peel off the first one or two outer layers of leaves, no worries. All the homegrown and farmers market Brussels I've ever eaten have had at least a couple of black dots on 'em.
