Oysters! So so so so so so disgusting.
Also, my first seitan attempt...it was brainy and slightly raw and not flavorful. So glad I can make edible food now!

Mulukhiyah soup, beloved in Egypt. It's jute leaves. Think bitter spinach with the texture of rubber cement.

I have always thought eggs were the grossest, smelliest food on earth. I also had unpleasant encounters with a mussel and the Gardein chicken somethings.

yeah, eggs were the grossest. And my family in England always served barely-cooked bacon. So vile!
Vegan: I think TVP is pretty gross.

Oh my goodness you guys are incredible at describing this shiitake! Sucking on soil! Dirty bathroom! I love it. I love reading it. Worst thing I ever made/ate as vegan (which is as far as I can remember at the moment) was a raw mushroom sauce. Blehhh.

A frozen bean burrito that tasted really funny, and when I opened it up to see why, I noticed that the beans were covered - COVERED - with mold. Major yuck.

radish wrote: Two words: bitter melon Ugh, yes. I ate this so much in the Philippines, because it was the only vegetable the women at the shelter where I worked knew how to 'cook' (I use the term loosely, because it was barely edible). I carry such a grudge against bitter melon that I still frown at it when I walk past it at the fruit and veg shop.

Ditto on the natto. My husband loves it and I have tried to eat it several times...ugh! The smell and the slime factor are just too much for me.

Pregan: My mom was a terrible, terrible cook. I think the worst thing she ever made was how she cooked fish. So, you'd get a cube of the fish meat, (I can't really recall what kind of fish) On top of this cube she melted a fuckload of cheddar cheese. Its totally unappetizing, so you flip it over, thinking you'll have the plain side and just leave the cheese. But on the other side she left the scales and skin on! >.<
Also, I used to eat breakfast bars like crazy, once I opened it up, took a bite, and it tasted god awful. I looked down and it was coooovered in mold >.< I never ate one ever again.
Vegan: The first time I successfully made tofu I marinated it in Italian vinegarette, on a skewer with red pepper, and then baked them in the oven, and while eating, dipped them into hummus. I told a friend of mine about it, and she decided to try when I came over for a barbeque. Only instead of yummy vinegarette, she soaked it in artificial beef flavouring. And instead of red pepper it was yellow pepper, which I loathe, and big slices of onion. It wasn't baked long enough either so it was extremely slimey. I tried to eat it, but I ended up throwing it up >.> I couldn't even pretend it was good.

I couldn't eat eggs because my mom used to make omelets with a crapload of garlic powder. To this day, the combination of garlic and eggs makes me dry heave. Also, I always had to have my bacon burnt beyond recognition.

I was on a train in Japan eating natto and the dude beside me thought it was the funniest thing in the world that a Westerner loved it. It's so good with that sharp Japanese-style mustard!

The grossest thing I've ever eaten was a packet soup (chicken flavour) that my Dad made, and then mixed cooked rice into. I ate it just before a car ride to my grandparents and barfed it up in front of a well known landmark. More than 20 years later it still haunts me. ETA: I also love natto, and find the texture to be kind of entertaining rather than horrid.

I just tried to make some tahini salad dressing. I guess I had too much lemon juice and not enough liquid in general, but it tasted of bile and looked chalky and chunky. I wasted like 1/4 cup tahini on it too. So sad, but at least I tried it before I put it on my greens, so I still ate them.

There's a family of restaurants in Austin called Mr. Natural that serves barely edible slop. I gave it several chances, because so many people love it, but it was absolutely vile. Worst food I can remember.
Tofutti sour cream, blergh. Cashew sour cream from Vegan Brunch is ALL I need.

My step-mother used to (maybe still does?) make a "casserole" made of a couple cans of pineapple and a bag of shredded cheddar cheese. I know I've talked about it here before, and that's because it haunts me.
I don't think I've eaten anything truly gag-worthy since going vegan. Smoked cheddar Sheese was pretty terrible. Oh, and I had fried plantains at a restaurant once and could not take more than one bite. It was my first and only plantain experience. I don't know if they were just cooked terribly or if I hate plantains, but I've been afraid of them ever since.

How it all Vegan's tangy cheese sauce tasted like fermented tuna and was a big old waste of time and energy.
Fermented tofu tops it all, though. It looks so delicious, which put me into a false sense of optimism. I honestly can't describe it fully, but imagine putting a soluble painkiller (or whatevs) on your tongue, then pouring chilli oil, salt and baking soda on it.

Durian. No question. The way it goes from being sort of custardy and fruity to tasting like (to borrow my friend James' eloquent description) the smell of an uncleaned gas station restroom in which someone has recently vomited is something that may never be fully erased from my memory...the horror, the horror!
