Just cut open a big hard yam and there are white spots inside, all over the flesh. Couldn't find anything online. Does anyone know if it's safe to eat or should I just toss it?

When I slice mine up, white spots usually appear. I think it's just the starch coming out or something. I've never worried much about it.

Thanks gaia! You're right, I found more on the google about the starchy liquid coming out so I wiped the potato and yup it came off. Silly me! Thanks

You're welcome! It's always better to be safe than sorry.

I'm glad you asked this, RandiJM. I've seen these white spots a few times and used the sweet potatoes anyway. I didn't die or anything, but I was slightlly uneasy. Then I'd forget about it until it happened again. Good to know they're okay to eat with oozy white sap!

I've had butternut squash do something similar, but it looked dewy so it was clearly sap. Vegetables are fun.
