Someone who just took the plunge into veganism is asking for banana cream pie recipes ... any recommendations? I can help her with whipped cream/graham cracker crust, but I haven't made banana cream pie before.

I'll appreciate any help!

I made something very similar to this and it turned out quite well. I should add as a caveat though that I've never had a pregan banana cream pie, so I have no basis for comparison.

i don't have a proper recipe, but last april i made a banana cream pie for a friend, and did something like this:

peanut oat cookie crust (it was a classic rolled oat/nut crust that i subbed peanuts instead of almond/walnuts for - i can find the recipe if you'd like)
melted chocolate coating the crust

made a cooked vanilla pudding, and whipped up some soyatoo, folded them together.

layered that with bananas in the crust, and topped with more whipped soyatoo.

my omni friend went CRAZY over it, and said it was like the banana cream pies of their youth.

i think the trick was taking a whipped cream (whatever you use) and a cooked pudding (whatever you use) and folding them gently together to create a wonderful base for the bananas to hang out in. and using lots of vanilla.

and it held up to slicing very, very well.

good luck!! cream pies like this can be difficult (with picky omni's anyway).

I've never actually made a banana cream pie, but I'm pretty sure Jell-o boxed puddings are vegan if you make them with non-dairy milk and come in banana flavors. Could be a starting place, maybe?

Jell-O cooked puddings work well with non-dairy milk. I haven't had much luck with the instant puddings though. I have read that there is something in the instant pudding which reacts to dairy protein and causes the pudding to thicken. It, unfortunately, doesn't work very well with non-dairy milk. Not for me, anyway.

There's a recipe in 1'000 Vegan Recipes that's really tasty, it's a coconut banana pie; I'd advise against using really ripe bananas though since it makes the pie look kind of grey. I used the whip cream recipe from "Sweet Freedom" to top it off, it was super yummy.
