Keyword being "common". I've been having diet issues for the past few years that look like they have an allergic component...I'm especially diligent about just following the nutrition counseling I got years ago because not taking the health nut information I stumbled on through word of mouth turned out to be an almost fatal mistake at one point. So essentially my kitchen is filled with whole grains, beans, nuts etc with very little in the way of processed foods.I spent a long time getting my act together...I was a cracker and granola bar girl for decades. However, I seem to have funky issues regardless of how healthy I try to be or what specific nuts/seeds/grains/etc I try eliminating. I had problems with dairy and meat as a kid, I swore up and down I had trouble with beans and anything that's been artificially doped up with fiber too. My doctor had me tested for celiacs and crohns, but I was negative. Fast forward to last Fall, I had temporary airway constriction that lasted months. It happened again this Fall. Both times my lungs were normal, but my airways weren't and I needed an inhaler. Then at the beginning of this year I started to get vicious blisters in my mouth, and I was told to avoid any new foods...again, it looked like a symptom of celiacs but I'm negative. Last weekend I had to be hospitalized for severe abdominal pain and vomiting, and yet again I had perfectly normal bloodwork and no temperature...but the emergency room gathered it was gastroenteritis. They discharged me on the terms that I see my general practicioner the next day, and then she put the pieces together and gave me a diagnosis of gastritis, most likely. Now I'm supposed to go caffeine free, acid free and adhere to a low residue diet. No nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans, raw vegetables, berries, tomatoes, peppers, etc everything basically. I've been eating pureed tofu, plain rice cakes, soup and bread for a week now and nuking or broiling vegetables that aren't lettuce. It's working, but I'm still having some discomfort because I find I can't really avoid whole grains entirely without having to worry about protein and iron. In the meantime I've cheated my veganism slightly and picked up some chex for the extra iron. I've also bought a bag of bob's redmill pea protein to add to things like oats so I don't have to add beans to them in order to make them a meal, but this really isn't something I can do every day. Since I'm a runner, this is already taking a lot of creativity. Can anyone help? Have any experience with a similar dietary restriction? And if anyone knows of lower-fiber vegan protein powders (has to be sugar and fructose free because of my meds too) that have extra vitamins in them please do share.
Ugh. I just have to keep saying, at least no one can get me down on my veganism! I have a medical excuse for not eating dairy and meat now. xD

Yikes! That sounds so hard! Sending you many good thoughts. I don't know if your insurance covers a vegan RD but man, I know in your shoes I'd really want one because seriously I couldn't begin to figure out how to eat a healthy and balanced meal with those restrictions.

I hope you find a solution soon!

I'm sure it doesn't! I'm trying to bully campus nutrition into giving me an appointment. I've got myself scheduled to see a doctor again this week to make sure she knows the rest of my relevant history...I saw different people for the blisters and one of the breathing issues. I've always had some of these problems, so I could easily ignore most of it...but it looks like it's threatening to get worse. Thanks for the thoughts! I really appreciate that. :)

Thank you! Well, I returned to see my campus health center this week and not only discovered that I was never tested for Crohns, just celiacs...but that I absolutely need to see a specialist. I shouldn't have ignored the referral my primary gave me years ago, but it looked like things were mellowing out and she never told me the blood test was only for celiacs! I'm only reluctant because my insurance won't cover it, but they will probably do an endoscopy to assess the severity and then try to diagnose specific allergies. I really hope it's not that complicated to keep under control. :/ It would be nice if this all ended with me feeling much better than ever. Fingers crossed.

Well, the verdict is that I have extremely bad IBS, which is relieving, but now I'm going through the full assortment of medications offered for it because my insurance doesn't want to pay for any of the good stuff and I keep having bad reactions to what else is available. Anyway...I've got no reason to worry about surgeries or death and that's a step up.

are you looking into fodmaps? id definitely try an elimination diet to find your trigger foods.

Ijustdiedinside-I'm not sure if I should because I suspect it's anything with fiber....I self-diagnosed with IBS a few years ago and tried some DIY elimination diets to no effect, and my other issue is severe constipation which my doctor says it triggering odd allergic attacks that look a lot like celiacs disease but are basically my body reacting to things that have stuck around for too long. So, I figure I'm still stuck between a rock and a hard place there unless I can get in to a nutritionist and see if there's a way I can eliminate foods and still guarantee I'm not going to make matters worse. So far all of my pleas to the campus nutritionist have been ignored...it may be awhile.
