Anyone have a great idea how to keep hands warm outside? I walk the dog every day in the morning and at night. I don't have a problem in the morning, I guess I'm still warm from sleeping, drinking my morning cuppa tea and eating hot cereal. But in the evening, I guess I'm stressed and tired etc and my hands get painfully cold, especially the fingers. I'm already wearing my winter gloves and and it's only just below 0 celcius. Yesterday I had to cut our walk short because I just couldn't take it. I wear mitts to keep the fingers together. I know there are pads you can put in your gloves but as far as I know they are a one-time thing only, or am I wrong there?

Is there a cheap, easy solution that I don't know about?

There are reusable ones. I should get some for myself. I'm always having trouble with my hands and feet during winter.

how tight are your gloves? i wear multiple pairs sometimes. but honestly, my hands are cold all the time, inside and outside, so i just get used to being miserable all winter.

If you wear mittens, I'd get a pair of of nice glove liners. When i snowboard I have the thicker glove liners under my mittens and i never have a problem.

Glove liners can also go under gloves - either way, a really good investment. You can get really great ones at camping/outdoor stores. I have poor circulation and always cold hands, but with glove liners + winter weight gloves I'm great.

If you can wear the gloves for a few minutes before you go out so the heat in there will start to build up before you are out in the cold. When you are out walking move your fingers lots like you are playing a piano or something. It will look weird so put one hand into your pocket and do it then switch hands (since you will need one to hold the leash).

Some of the resuable ones look like this. Each is a pouch filled with liquid and a small metal disc. You bend the disc to start a chemical reaction that releases heat and turns the liquid into a solid. After they've been used, you can place them in a pot of boiling water until the chemical inside liquifies and then they're ready to go again.

In addition to what other people have said, I used to loop my dog's leash through a belt loop on my pants in the winter so that I could keep my hands curled up in balls in my pockets. I guess this would only work with a smaller dog unless you have super heavy duty pants though.

if you have a microwave, you could also sew a little pouch full of rice and microwave it. or bring a mug of hot nighttime tea with you.

I bike all winter (when I'm not being totally lazy), and every time I am stopped at a light, I open and close my hands and wiggle my fingers the whole time. I will also squeeze and release my handlebars when it's really cold while I'm riding. It definitely helps keep my circulation going during those harsh Chicago winters. Definitely keep your fingers moving!

All of this. Also, this depends on how much energy you and your dog have, but walking very briskly might help. My hands are always cold when I go for a walk or run in the winter, but if I'm moving quickly my hands warm back up.

In my Minnesota days, I always wore at least one pair of cheap cotton gloves under my big mittens. Helps a lot. And is cheap.

You can put your mitts in the microwave.
