I have a colonoscopy booked for August 2nd - right after the long weekend! Starting a few days before I can't have seeds, nuts, or dark coloured fruit, or fruit/vegetables with seeds (tomatoes, cucumber, strawberries)...and vegetables and whole grains are not recommended either. So considering these and other high fiber things like beans make up most of what I what I eat, any ideas for what I should be eating? It's going to be hot and I'm already feeling sorry for myself that I'll be trying to maintain this diet on a weekend where BBQs are rampant! Stupid colon.

Sounds like a good excuse for a few days of eating poorly! All the stuff you're like "Ehh I shouldn't eat this for dinner..." like EB and nooch on white pasta, and cookies, and ice cream, and grilled 'cheese' sandwiches.

I had one last year and ate stuff like Chex cereal, white rice,Italian ices, brown rice crackers and....I don't remember what else! I didn't have much of an appetite at the time so it wasn't difficult for me. I will say it made the prep MUCH easier than what I expected.I will spare you the details....

You can probably eat tofu, seitan and commercial meat subs.

Yeah I think I just ate some boring plain starchy foods for two days. It's not bad, don't worry. I don't even think the stuff you have to drink is too bad.

thanks! yeah it looks like I will have to throw my normal eating habits out the window for a few days. I'm also curious about "recovery" time - were you up and at 'em again the next day or did it take more than that?

I was fine and back at work the next day. Didn't even feel too bad once I got home after it. And slept like a baby during it.

"Colonoscopy in August" sounds like a really terrible foreign movie.

I ate "normal" food for the couple days before. Certain veggies/foods like celery, cucumbers, tomatoes, corn etc. are not recommended but stuff like carrots, greens, etc. are fine. I ate whole grains--I wasn't instructed otherwise--just not breads/cerreals with seeds (so brown rice, oats, etc. were fine). Beans, most fruit... I didn't find it very limiting. My prep worked fine.

Good luck with the procedure!
I had a colonoscopy/endoscopy at the same time so I was put to sleep. I don't know if you will be awake for yours but I've heard it isn't too bad. Recovery, for me, wasn't too bad. I don't know what your reason for one is, but it may make your symptoms more pronounced. (Biopsy site may sting, cause cramping; inflamed areas may get more irritated; etc.)

Colonscopy Pasta: Pasta, olive oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper (and tabasco). Veggie free/Anti-butt-plugging but very flavorful and delicious. Really, it sounds so wrong but it is so right.

That pasta sounds pretty yummy actually. I didn't get any symptoms, also had the combined colonoscopy/endoscopy. I'm pretty sure I went straight back to regular foods. They gave me a sandwich after the procedure. I remember having the driest mouth! (cos they stick stuff down your throat).

I picked my dad up from his colonoscopy once. He was sedated for it so he couldn't drive. He was totally fine. We went home, he insisted I make him food cause he was starving, I fed him, and then I think he took a nap? But yea, his biggest complaint was that he was ravenous.

Thanks guys, you've made me feel infinitely better about it! I'm a little worried about the "liquids only day" in the 24 hrs prior, mostly because I tend to feel faint/shaky if I don't eat every 3-4 hours - but I've got a super duper boyfriend who is driving me to and from the hospital and will be around to make sure I don't pass out!

Yeah, it's not fun, but not so bad. I had combined so it was under anesthesia. I was fine within a couple hours and mostly just hungry and glad it was over.

My dad had the regular procedure and also was fine right after.

I think it's a procedure that is not nearly as awful as expected.

I was able to have clear veg broth and clear candy so I don't remember being too horribly hungry.

I'm bumping this because in addition to all of my other medical drama (thyroid surgery), I also am having gastro problems, and have a colonscopy scheduled in August.

I'd love to hear your experiences/advice on the prep, the procedure, the aftermath.

I feel like I'm broken on all ends...

I picked my dad up from his a few years ago. They wouldn't let him go until he farted, so I had to sit in the room and listen for the fart so I could let the nurse know. Good times.

Get some not-red crystal light or similar to add to the prep. Goes down easier. Salad, pasta for meals. I ate very clean before mine so that the whole process would go easier, and it did.

On the day before you don't have to starve, just eat clear things. Non-red shot blocks are OK. Tons of water.

OH! Some soothing wipes, #1 recommendation.

As for afterwards, it all depends how you do with anesthesia and if you've had other recent procedures with anesthesia. Side effects tend to be cumulative. I felt pretty run-through-the-mill after. It was a good excuse for napping. Not that I need an excuse.

And, lucky lucky me, I get to go through it all again in 3 years (instead of 5.)

It's also a bit more fun if you think of it as a clownsdoscomy where clowns are removed from your butt.

the prep sucks, but the procedure itself isn't really a big deal. i echo what ~sz said, eat light the day before prep. your doctor will tell you what's ok to eat the day of prep (usually clear things, no red/purple stuff).

my last one was delayed for 3 or 4 hours so afterwards was so hangry i was ready to kill someone. if you can, schedule yourself to be the first appointment.

yeah, the worst for me was forcing myself to drink the lemon/lime gatorade+miralax all throughout the day before. guhh. so much!

afterwards when i woke up, i was also really hungry and thirsty. they offered juice and something solid, but i don't remember what it was.
