So I think I injured one of my nails within the last few months. I'm injury prone so I don't remember the exact incident but it has had a bruise under the nail for quite a while.
Yesterday, the nail started peeling off at the bruise and the nail is very thin, almost like it has worn away some. The rest of my nails are fine and strong, but this one is not. I thought it might be an unseen fungus or maybe the injury caused it but how do I tell? What, if anything, should I do? I was thinking about putting some anti-fungal on it, just in case.
Anyone ever have something like this happen?

This happened to me because of the stupid kitchen shoes I had to wear for my food service rotation of my internship and being on my feet for 9 hours a day. It's most likely not a bruise though. It's probably a hematoma. That's what mine was. I soaked my foot in water for a few hours one day and all the dried blood that I had initially thought was a bruise washed away.

Not to freak you out, but there are some skin cancers that look like a bruise under the nail and turn out to very much not be. Maybe a trip to the doctor if possible?

So, I looked online at the skin cancer pics and those aren't like mine although I know there are variations. I think I figured it out. My nail looks like pictures of people with bent back nails. It could be that or something else.
Get this though, sometime in the last year, the half moons at the base of my nail disappeared for all but 3 of my nails. I didn't realize this until today. So then I started googling and it can indicate a number of things including underactive thyroid (and of course I've gained weight in the last year, mostly unexplained). I have a lot of symptoms that match up with underactive thyroid.
Anyway, it seems like a doctor visit is in order just to get checked up.

Okay peoples! Stop freaking me out about my lunulas people! I have 4 clearly visible, two which I thought weren't there but when you push back the cuticle they are there, and the rest not.

just to make things worse I'll add my story.
I bashed my nail on a rock surfing last year and ripped half of it off the nailbed. It still hasnt grown in right and its probably some dumb fungus that got in that I cant get rid of, now my big toenail is in like a crescent shape that looks pretty cool in a gross way and I nothing is helping to fix it (vinegar soak, tea tree oil, vicks vapor rub)...its annoying, I wish itd all just fall off so I could start over

Lanulas vary and it is not good or bad. It doesn't mean anything.
linanil, sounds like you have partial onychomedisis due to minor trauma to the nail matrix. Fancy talk meaning you hurt your nail and now it's partially fallen off. Sounds as though it is growing back. Depending how serious the trauma was it may or may not return to normal. I would just be careful with it... maybe wear a bandage if it's sensitive and maybe use peroxide or something to prevent infection. A trip to the doc doesn't hurt but I wouldn't worry too much... if you think you injured yourself that is probably what happened and what you describe is consistent with what can happen to nails after trauma.
(I do nails:)
