My scalp has been itching for a while, and it never even occured to me it could be lice. Then I SAW ONE!! Yuck.
Not sure about the meaning with this post but I just needed to share this.

I'm sorry you have to deal with that! I had them once when I was ten or so, I remember it itched really bad. Now I have a kid in daycare, so I have to check him for lice, but we've been lucky so far.

I had lice in my mid 30s and it was terrible. It took me three tries of the shampoo to get rid of them, plus coming my hair with a lice comb several times a day.

I had them when I was at uni. For months! because I asked my boyfriend to check and he obviously didn't know what he was looking for and told me my head was clear when it was crawling with the forkers! I ended up having to douse my head in tea-tree oil and keep combing them out several times a day for about a week.

pretty much all kids get them, so maybe you're making up for a lice-free childhood. do the treatments religiously, comb out their eggs, and get rid of those forkers!

Kid 2 came home from her internship (teaching little ones about nature) with them. I was up late dealing.
BUt it looks like she is the only one in the house with them.

I had them as an adult and still not really sure how it came about. But if I had to do over again, I would totally shave my head. The pesticide shampoo is really awful.

i have told this before but it's so awesome i will tell it again- my dear spouse grew up in the slums of São Paulo, and lice were rampant. they were poor and doctor was only for if you were dying, so they would soak their hair in coca-cola, cover it in a plastic bag for a few hours, and the little bugs would be dead. you know, if your shampoo doesn't work out.....
(interwebz tell me that this seems to be pretty common. and i thought coke was only for cleaning engines!)

My head is itchy just reading this thread. I don't know why I thought I should open it.

Anyway, don't forget to wash your pillow cases and sheets!

Update: I got a shampoo at the pharmacy and was told to do the treatment (combing before and after, letting the shampoo sit for 10 minutes before rinsing) twice with one week in between. I did it three times just to be safe. the itching stopped almost immediately after the first treatment and now it feels awesome again. Woho!

I had lice when I was a kid and then again in high school. When I got them the second time, I had really long hair and it took forever to get rid of them. It was awful. They sell a spray to disinfect your furniture and such. I recommend washing all of your clothing and bedding with really hot water, throwing out your brushes, and spraying down all of your furniture, including the seats of your car. Also remember to vacuum your carpets.

By the way, you don't have to come in direct contact with someone's head to get lice. For example, if one person with lice sat down on a chair and a louse fell/crawled onto the chair, and then you sat down, it could crawl into your hair.
