I want to do an elimination diet to figure out triggers for my migraines and IBS. Anyone ever done one? I have no idea what I'm doing. Help!

I've never done it, but I've actually thought of doing one too. Can you start with keeping a food journal for a week or two, and then reviewing it to get ideas of what to eliminate? I do think that journaling would be important anyway, so you can look back and see how each elimination affected you, or if it helped at all.

Good luck!

Here are two threads about elimination diets from the old board: hope the links work:

I'm not doing a full fledged one, but am journaling what I eat and sticking mainly to elimination diet foods. I have noticed an improvement. I now have some normal days which is a huge relief. If there is a possibility that you may be able to get better by identifying which food sensitivities you have, I say, give it a go.
Here is a description of what foods to eat on the diet.

hey appifanie, have you heard about FODMAPS? they have found that certain types of carbohydrates may trigger IBS symptoms, so if you want to do an elimination diet I would start there.

this article is pretty good - http://www.webmd.com/ibs/features/findi ... ibs?page=2

This one is much more in depth - http://www.todaysdietitian.com/newarchi ... 0p30.shtml

Here's a blog post that lists foods that are considered to be FODMAPS that may cause problems. http://www.candidrd.com/2010/09/do-you- ... lprit.html

For my migraine triggers, I used the list from heal your headache and avoided all of those things for a few months. Then one at a time, I tried adding back the things I really cared about one at a time. It was a much more extensive list I had seen elsewhere (though the book is otherwise terrible). Adding IBS into it might make it harder than that though.
