OMG guys - sorry if this is TMI...

Last night my poop was so hard I think I pulled a back muscle trying to get it out. I started at 10:00 PM and I finally was able to get it all out at 2AM after going to bed and waking up. It was just kinda stuck in me. This happens time to time. I do not know why. I eat a lot of beans, a lot of fiber, I do take a supplement with iron though..

I have always had poop problems, from elementary school when I had to carry around geriatric wipes for fissures to high school when I would go and so much blood would come out I had to go to 3 different doctors who never figured out what was wrong.

Now with the hard poop thing - what do I do? Should I buy stool softeners? Do they make vegan ones? It is only once or twice a month if that. It hurts. :/

Are you drinking enough water?

I had a similar problem when I tried taking Metformin, never had a problem before that but my issue was fixed by stopping it.

Ouch. You have my sympathies. I had a similar scenario a few years ago brought on by using codeine on a daily basis for weeks. It was pretty distressing.

Is there any specific pattern to it beyond it being once or twice per month? Could it be any sort of food or medication that causes it?

That' s not happy! I would say drink more water too. And what meds are you on? The only time I've had something like this is when I was taking pain killers after surgeries or something.

Drink lots of water. Supplements with iron mess me up no matter what the bottle says. Hot water with lemon is sometimes helpful to get things going.

I've been meaning to ask...how much blood in your stool is normal?

Are you talking inside your poo or when you wipe?

Answers to Qs: I drink tons of water! Water all day - everyday! 8 glasses is about average...The only meds I have taken in the last few days are asprin - only like 2 a day for a shoulder pain. I take a iron included once a day and another supplement but nothing new. I do not notice any type of poo-pattern, my poo is usually borders around solid to hard. I get 'the runs' right before or during my period...I go poo about every 2 days...

Try Vega smoothie infusion mix in your smoothies if you drink them. That shiitake clears me right out!

Every 2 days is very limited for vegans, but everyone is different. Iron is definitely constipating, and calcium supplements can have an impact too. Do you eat a high veggie diet with lots of fruit, kale and other leafy greens? Prunes too? If not, give that a try. If you are only having severe problems a couple times/month, you might try a water-based enema at those times too.

Normal and Ok are 2 different things. Normally, you shouldn't expect blood but not unusual for it to happen occasionally. If the blood is dark red, then I'd see a doctor. If the blood is bright red and infrequent, then it is quasi normal. If it is bright red and frequent, you probably should talk to a doctor. The things I've read is that bright red is more external and can be caused by many things that generally aren't a concern including small tears, hemarroids and similar. Dark red might indicate a more serious problem. If you ate beets recently, then it isn't blood.

Hmm. I'd say increase your intake of fruits and veg then, because lots of water won't do much if there's no fiber in there.

If you're a vampire, I'd say your stool should be all blood.

If you're a zombie, I'd say bits of undigested brains and perhaps some visible blood are normal.

If you're a human, increase the roughage in your diet because it's good for you (the word roughage is sorely underused, don't you think?)

If you're a robot, please see your robodoctor. Could be rust.

Ouchy! Iron tends to bind people up. Prune juice is the best thing to take everyday for constipation. I wouldn't use laxatives for more than a couple of days because they stop working and have the opposite effect after a while.

Also, if there is a lot of straining and the poop is ouchy it can tear the tissue around your poophole and cause bleeding. Anytime that has happened to me it has been a bright pinky red.

Do mention it all to your doctor though if it persists.

My TMI response: Unfortunately I identify with this thread. :/ I've had issues with stubborn poops for my entire life and yes, I also eat a fairly high-fiber diet. For me the blood is never IN the stools, just a result of straining hard and ouchie butthole. Not sure if that's the case for you or not. Anyway, for me, this is what seems to trigger it:

-Dehydration (maybe you need to drink even more water?)
-Supplements (especially iron and calcium)
-Painkillers
-Eating a lot of pasta in one sitting (I feel like it turns to glue inside my body or something)

If you are in a real bind (gah) you can try laxatives, but I wouldn't use them for more than a day or so at the time because your body can become reliant on them and that's bad news. So for that reason I avoid them. This is what I do to try to naturally alleviate the problem:

-Drink prune juice or eat a couple of prunes every day
-Drink a lot of liquid
-Go for a vigorous walk
-Split up your supplements if you can so you're not taking a big dose of iron or calcium all at one time

Lastly, are you absolutely certain you're getting enough fiber? I know as a vegan one naturally tends to eat more fiber than the average person, but different people eat different stuff so who knows. You could try keeping a food diary for a little while and seeing if there are any patterns in your eating around the time these episodes occur.

Isn't there a thing between fiber and water intake? Like it has to be a certain way or you will be bound up? And sometimes people don't retain the water they drink and just pee it all out right away. There is a potential that you could be dehydrated and still drinking a ton of water.

I really think that the advice of all vegans are poop machines is off. Yup, we are all different so let's stick to that. I pass gas like a windy day but not so much poop...

I did just realize something...the last few nights my stomach has been acting odd at bed, really noisy. Maybe some digestion issues?

I start the day off with a Luna Fiber bar. I try to sneak in a lot of veggies and fruit that are fresh but I tend to like cooked things like broccoli more because it is easier for me to digest. Maybe I should get a cheaper blender and do kale smoothies? A bit sweeter with almond milk or something? I tend to eat salad and feel like at times. I eat beans 2-3 times a week...Whole grain cereal is another biggie...I have been depressed the last few days - does mood and poo go together?

I do yoga, walk, gym time...I am active. I always reach for water. I pee a lot due to how much water I drink!

I found this article and it seems helpful.

http://www.thesaucyvegan.com/showthread.php?t=2186

As for bloody poo, when I had to see the specialist I was bleeding really bad...I mean, I was in high school, living at home so I called my mom in showed her and she freaked out. It was a few times a week. The doctors never could find what was wrong. I went veg at 16, my problems kinda cleared up. I had a few more problems, nothing bad. I have been vegan for 13-14 years occasionally I get a bit of blood but I think I wipe to hard.

I'll agree with you there! I've found that I go more frequently as a vegan than I did as an omni, but I still have issues with this stuff so am not a poop machine. And I keep a food diary so I am actually aware of my fiber intake and stuff like that. My boyfriend and I were having a wonderful conversation about this the other day... basically for him, farting = POOP TIME IS NOW so he couldn't understand how I could feel gassy and not be able to poop. But it happens to me all the time! Oh, the mysteries of the human body.

I don't have any experience with this stuff, but I know some people who swear by taking probiotics and digestive enzymes and stuff like that, so maybe that's another avenue to explore?

You could just take some probiotic pills, same effect, probably cheaper.

Only anecdotal, but here's my two cents. I had a friend with exactly what you are describing. She was vegan and I worked with her, so I saw that she ate a ton of fresh fruit, veggies, and beans for breakfast and/or lunch. She also drank water and did a ton of yoga. All the right things that everyone tells you but it didn't matter. She developed hemorrhoids and freaked out. Things only changed for her when she started acupuncture and the acupuncturist recommended several herbs, maybe probiotics, I'm not sure what. I just remember she was amazed by how much acupuncture helped.

I'd say, if you're super constipated like that only once in a while, you should just take a laxative. Don't strain to poo if you can help it. If its only twice a month its probably not a diet issue, but yes, drink more water.

Actually yes!!! Something like 90% of the seratonin supplies in the body are in the digestive tract. It's one of the reasons that it is very common for people with IBS and various bowel disorders to have either depression or anxiety issues. The other reason is, of course, that poo issues are stressful!!!
