Something happened when I turned 30. I seem to be actually concerned about my teeth now. Yesterday I finally went for a check-up. It's nearly 10years since my last check up. I need one small filling due to decay and another filling due to trauma. I also need some fissure seals and apparently I am going to be prone to decay because of fissures. One of my wisdom teeth may eventually have to come out too.

While I am great at brushing my teeth I am the pits at flossing. The past week I've been starting to do it with some floss I had pre-vegan and on my next payday I'm going to order some vegan floss and carry it in my bag.

Has anyone got any recommendations for maintaining dental health or improving current conditions?

I think when the cookbook challenge is over I'm going to work on really cutting down on sugar. The medication I am on gives me major sugar cravings. So severe that one evening I resorted to sucking on a lemon to try quell the craving so I'm hoping during the summer I can try reduce the dose. I don't drink fizzy drinks as it is but I've turned into a real tea demon the past year. I make myself stick to the one cup of coffee in the morning (I drink black).

we've got another thread going about this- dental health woes?

i also didn't go to the dentist for about 10 years and ugh. thank god that era is over. i'm still not a great flosser and my gums bleed [and i'm getting OLD and long in the tooth, as they say]. i tried oil pulling with sesame oil and it really cut down on the bleeding, like remarkably so. i don't know how it works but it has really made a difference.

Oh I didn't realise! I must have a look for it later. Thanks.

I've also been a bad dentist-goer. I went a few months ago after probably 7 or 8 years of not going. Definitely hadn't been since before I was 18 and my dental care stopped being free. I, too, had to have 2 fillings, but the dentist also said I had some gum problems and was probably genetically predisposed to getting gum disease. Anyway, he told me to use those little interdental brushes, which I have been doing religiously. When I went back to the dentist for a cleaning a couple of months after my first appointment, he said my gums were looking much healthier, plus they have stopped bleeding when I brush in between my teeth, which they did loads at first.

So, basically, my advice is interdental brushes. Don't have to worry about them not being vegan, either.
