Maybe? As far as I know I don't have any food allergies, but I am pretty allergic to things like dust, mold, pollen, dander, etc, which I take medicine for. Not sure how that would manifest itself as acne, but who knows. I do live close to a park now (actual trees!) than I did before, so perhaps my body is scolding me for not surrounding itself with pure concrete?

I have been dealing with cystic acne for 20 years now (Holy crepe, I did not realize it's been that long!!). In my 20's it was horrific, I tried about 10 medications. I tried retinA, tetracycline, minocycline, doxycycline, benzaclin, benzoyl peroxide, tazorac and many others. The tazorac worked the best! My face was so clear when I was on that poison. When I got pregnant i had to come off it immediately because it can cause birth defects, I will not go back on it now.

Currently, my face has been the clearest it has ever been in my life and I am on no medications. I started following a strict Dr. Fuhrman type diet. All vegan (obviously), green juicing, green smoothies, huge salads, steamed greens, bean soups and no sugar. I experimented with a few different diets and the high green diet works the best. Whenever I eat white carbs or sugar or drink alcohol I get a breakout. I have been eating sugar foods, white bread and boozing during this July 4th weekend and sure enough I have an oozing cyst on my chin, my first one in months. I must say alcohol and sugar are the things that make me breakout most right now. I know dairy was also, but you don't eat dairy so we know it's not that. Could it be sugar, white flour or booze? You could try doubling your green intake?

Acne is such a frustrating and complex issue. I feel your pain.

Did your doctor recommend biotin? I got acne from taking it so I stopped and the acne subsided.

Yep, for hair thinning. I won't die if I don't take it, but I actually can see a little bit of new growth in my hair since I started which is why I want to continue taking it. I think what I will do to start is maybe ditch the B12 (I take a multi with a large % of B12 anyway) and take a smaller dose of biotin and see if that helps. If it doesn't, I'll drop the biotin and see.

As for carbs/sugar/booze... I haven't been eating much bread lately because it's not really something I crave. I drink only occasionally (let's say 3-5 drinks per month?) so I doubt it's that. I do eat some foods with refined sugar, so I suppose that's something I could keep an eye on.

I am reviving this thread because I've still been thinking about getting off birth control pills, and am researching ways to lessen the chance of breakouts. I found this blog post which is really interesting, she talks about some specific supplements that might be of help, and also about the possibility of weaning off BCP:

Hoping this might be helpful for people even if they're not currently on BCP, as the supplements can help with balancing hormones regardless.
