Curious as to the responses....

I am not. And my workplace penalizes those who don't. To preface, I'm healthy as a horse, it's rare that I get a cold even once a year. And I've never ever had the flu. My hospital offers them free to all staff, but if we don't get one, we have to wear a mask for the duration of flu season, usually a couple of months, when we're working. It infuriates me that I am penalized for not getting one, but the parents and other visitors to my unit are not required to wear a mask if they don't get a shot.

I think I probably will, since we have a baby and I'm also around a lot of other little kids all the time. I never get sick either, though.

I'm getting mine. I never used to, and I'd always get one big sick during the winter where I'd feel like asparagus for a week or two, then last year I got a flu shot because I finally had health insurance so I wanted to use it, and I didn't get sick. But I love vaccines, to the point where I'm peeved that they didn't come out with the HPV vaccine until I was too old for it.

I'm getting it. Can't afford the risk as an asthmatic.

I already got it!

a) I have a terrible immune system and catch every single thing that goes around. I get the proper flu every year or two and it knocks me out and it's just so so awful.
b) I'm an asthmatic.
c) Most importantly, while I will survive the flu there are many people who won't, and I believe it's part of the cost of living in a society to try to mitigate that risk for those who cannot get the vaccine.

Yay vaccines!

I never get the flu. I guess I'm lucky, although now that I've said it I'll probably get it this year.

I understand getting the vaccine to prevent infection of others in the community, but I don't know, its efficacy is moderate so I guess my dislike of going to the dr/pharmacy has won out in the past. If I worked around children or elderly people I would get it.

This.

I always get the jab. I actually got Flu B this year (confirmed by swab), even after having the vaccine. Shift work + being around sick people who just cough and sneeze all over you without covering their mouths or turning away can make for a nasty time. It took me a week to get well enough to get back to work, and I am normally a very fit and well person. I would not have wanted to get one of the nastier strains, frankly.

The ladies with the needles generally walk around work offering it to people who are there, and I always get mine without having to leave work or take more than 5 minutes away from work. It is very handy.

I have seen a lot of otherwise young and healthy people end up in ICU with influenza. If you can do anything to avoid this, it is worth the trouble.

I was going to type a whole response, but j-dub wrote what I was thinking. I don't get the flu shot for myself (though I do appreciate not getting the flu). I get it for everybody who can't.

I got it, for a couple of reasons:

1. I'm pregnant and due in the midst of flu season. I don't particularly care if *I* get sick, oh well, I'm a big healthy person. But I don't want to get the flu and pass it on to a baby.
2. My kid goes to preschool, and as well all know, preschools are pits of disease.
3. My workplace gave out free flu shots to full-time employees like me. A large percentage of people I work with are temps. Temps = no insurance and also no free flu shot. (I also would guess there's some other percentage of people I work with who can't get insurance for other reasons.) Again, not a big deal if I get sick-- but it doesn't seem fair for me to get sick and then pass that on to people who don't have the same access to preventative services that I have, or access to affordable healthcare if they do get sick.

Or: basically what j-dub said.

Let's all agree with J-Dub!

Seriously, no matter how healthy you think you are, please remember that you do not live in a bubble and could transmit the flu to someone for whom it would be dangerous/deadly.

If I was eligible to get a flu jab then I would. But I'm not so wont. And now Vantine is going to give me a pinch, which is probably rather like getting a jab anyway but without the benefits.

I got one this year for the first time ever.

1) I commute in and out of Philadelphia 5 days a week. I take the train and work in a big building. I come in contact with way too many sick people now.

2) Last year I got sick, sick, sick and I don't want that to happen again.

3) I have asthma and my doc yelled at me and told me I have to.

I was freaked out though. Never having had a flu shot before I didn't know how I would react to it and I didn't have time to research it because I was at the doc for something else and he sprang it on me. I could have said no, but he talked me into it. And I was fine after, no reaction at all.

Dare I ask are they vegan?? And do they get tested on animals??

Go herd protection, whoo!

As an asthmatic with a severe neurological disease darn tooten I'm pro flu-shot. I got mine a couple of weeks ago and didn't even get a raised temp. As well as being potentially life threatening for many people flu can easily be a trigger for other chronic and severe health conditions, even in healthy people who never get sick. You can be carrying it for a couple of days before you even realise, just think how many people you can put at risk over a <48 hr period.

Yup! Got mine last year and it is so easy to do, I will definitely be doing it each year.
I don't typically get sick, but when I do, it's bad. And also, folks around me might not have great immune systems and I'd hate to be a carrier for something that could potentially kill.

Got mine at the end of September. I come in contact with a lot of children each week and besides not wanting to catch their germs, I'd hate to pick it up and spread it to 10 kids from different school districts and different grades who would take it to school and infect hundreds of other kids. No, the vaccine is not vegan, but not spreading the flue to hundreds of kids feels like the more vegan option to me. Also, last winter, my next door neighbor's daughter died from the flu. She was a middle aged adult, not a child or elderly person. I don't know if she had any health issues that made her more at risk.

I had a vaccine reaction to it once, oculo-respiratory syndrome. I'll never get that vaccine again. It was awful, I've never coughed that hard in my life and I couldn't breathe.
