When it comes to birth control, I seem to be a bleeder... if constant bleeding is a side-effect, I'm that guy.

If I remember rightly, I bled for several weeks after getting my mirena inserted, and checked in with the clinic several times to be like, "what the fork?!"

It settled down eventually, though, and while I do still have periods (though irregular ones), I don't get bleeding in between.

Ugh. This is my first period in almost two years (pregnancy, breastfeeding), so I'm all messed up. No idea how to handle this. Lost my Diva cup in my move last year somehow. Using baby washcloths as pads. Am a mess. Please stop bleeding, uterus.

The board is back! I just saw on Reddit. It might disappear but I thought I'd post anyway.

I had the jaydess inserted two weeks ago. Insertion was a bit grim; the mirena wouldn't fit (three attempts) and then the jaydess JUST squeezed through. I'd been feeling okay until yesterday afternoon when I got super bad abdominal stabby pains and the most horrendous cramping. It came in waves and made me feel a bit sick. It eased off a bit last night, I'm just mega crampy this morning. I have bleeding too, and my period isn't due yet but the doc tells me it could be all over the place. The leaflet basically says "anything can happen LOL" and that abdominal pain is a very common side effect so I figure I'm just being a Class A Wimp.

Anyhow I wrote a thing about my experience if anyone wants to see :) https://spiceboxofearth.co.uk/2017/02/0 ... ting-tips/

Jenny, how are you going with the IUD now? My gynaecologist wants me to get the Mirena. He offered to fit it there and then at my appointment today but I declined as I had to catch the bus back (actually its a good thing I did because I ended up having no money for the bus so had to walk the three miles home). So instead I will get an appointment through the post. He seems to think I need no preparation and I'll be fine immediately afterwards but I'm wary! I'm happy to try the Mirena (nothing else left for me haha) but I'm scared!

Well, I had a couple of days of bad cramps, then a week or two of nothing, then a heinously long period with more cramping and now there's nothing at all :)

I'd be warned the first period after insertion can be brutal, which makes sense as your body adjusts.

If I now get 3 years of hassle free contraception then it will 110% have been worth it. All birth control involves an element of getting used to, I think. I'd say it's worth a go :)

This is so nuts to me! I could never handle that kind of thing on the spot! You made the right decision I think, though insertion is breeze for a lot of people, seemingly the majority.

I am still scarred from my first IUD insertion. My doctor had no idea what she was doing. I've had two since that were fine. Good luck! Still so worth it no matter how much I bled and was in pain.

Thanks! I'm glad it's going ok now Jenny. I'm at the point where my periods are so awful surely anything must be better. And hopefully this will be better than the myriad of pills I've tried.

Vijita - oh I agree! He said "I can fit it now" and my mind went into "what the fizzle, panic!" mode. Everything I've read says to take painkillers beforehand, be prepared to bleed and be sore afterwards etc, not really a spur of the moment thing. But I think since this guy is a specialist gynaecologist he usually deals with things much more severe than a mirena insertion so it just seemed like nothing to him. But yeah, I am not a spur of the moment person, at least not with things like that...

I'd heard good things about the hormonal IUD (Mirena) and the one I have is basically a smaller version (Jaydess) so lasts 3 years instead of 5. After the initial shock (and after your uterus does its little protest) it's supposed to be barely noticeable and lighten/stop periods, so it all sounds like a good deal to me. Just make sure you take time out, get a hot water bottle and decent painkillers and make sure there's cake to hand :)

I'd heard of the jaydess before, usually when I bring up the IUD doctors go on about how young I am and say I can't have it, so I thought the smaller one would be what I get but this guy seems to think I should get the Mirena. We'll see how it goes!

I'm an expert in hot water bottles and microwave mug cakes so that should be ok. I usually spend the first few days of my period crying in pain so it can't be much worse, I hope!

Well, I'm 35 and the 3.8mm Jaydess barely managed to get through my cervix so I think it really depends on each person's body! I know it's supposed to be easier when you're on your period so I'd definitely recommend trying to match the two up :)

I don't think I have a choice as to when it is, to be honest. I'm just getting a letter in the post with an appointment and that'll be that. My GP doesn't do them so I have to have it done at the hospital which is why.

Ah poop. Mine was limited too, as I had to wait for both the IUD-deploying GP and the nurse to be free together. Let us know how it goes though, yanno, in a not weird way :D

Well I got the letter through, it won't be till the 25th April and apparently I will also be having a hysteroscopy? Or is that the same thing? I don't know. So I'll have at least one more period to survive...

According to Dr Google that's teeny thin camera thriugh the cervix so they can have a looksee in the womb. I imagine it'll feel very similar to having the coil put in :)

I guess the figured since they were in there anyway then why not!

After a rather dramatic first period after insertion, I've had a VERY light one too, so hoping that'll be it now for 3 years.
