I am getting very frustrated with my IBS. So I had a serious allergy attack, and Sudafed and Benedryl weren't working. I panicked and went to the doctor ... but it wasn't MY doctor! He tried to get me to take antibiotics (which I paid for and never used.) I mean, COME ON! I have IBS! Do you want me to be sick for weeks? I just took the Claritin-D and Tylonol and got a lot better ... until I had an attack Sunday night, out of the blue. It came back Monday morning and I was crying so bad I broke down and took an IBS pain pill.

Now it's still goofy and I am afraid to eat anything. I think it's the decongestant in the Claritin, because it's screwing with my blood pressure and heart rate.

On top of that, I have my mother on my back thinking it's celiac, and she wants me to be tested. So I was checking out the IBS Clinic in Seattle, and now I wish I had $4,000 to go there!

Has anyone been tested for hypothyroidism with IBS? *Sorry for the switching of topics all around; I am super paranoid tonight!*

I ate something my stomach did not like and I'm looking pregnant again - UGH.

newsie - I take generic zyrtec every single day and that helps my allergies. Also, have you tried quitting gluten? I did a trial run of it and it helped me so much that I've stayed off.

I have been tested for hypothyroidisim but I don't have it.

I'm sorry! I am going through that right now, as I have my period, too. Maybe it's the sugar? Try some ginger tea.

Yea, I am going to try gluten-free, or to the best of my abilities. My boyfriend's new doctor told him he probably has IBS (without any tests for him first) and told him to go gluten-free for 3 months. Wee, this is going to be a trip.

yeah i had a doc look at this huge list of symptoms and he just went "oh, you have ibs" and that was it, but it was helpful because it never occurred to me. then i started paying attention to my food journal and quit gluten. i miss it a lot, but i almost always feel so much better.

the pregnant belly is gone today, but my period is incoming soonish as well.

uuugh, whenever I do a workout that involves jumping I feel everything inside my stomach moving around and hear water sloshing. I've always had the sloshing, but the urgency is since I got IBS and it sucks.... Is is possible to be sensitive to gluten without it showing on a Celicac panel? Between the constant bloating and gassiness and weird noises I don't know what to think anymore (besides, oh it's IBS so I should resign myself to a life of crappitude)...

yes - i had a celiac panel and it showed no problems with gluten whatsoever. eliminating it proved that i'm intolerant

OK, maybe I will give this gluten free thing a try for two or three weeks too. I eat something with wheat for like every meal (so if that is the culprit no wonder I'm bloated all the forking time lately) so this should be interesting.. Major food shopping tomorrow then I guess.

Depending on which other foods are an issue, you might have trouble with the fructans in wheat - look up fructose malabsorption.

hmn, I wish the tests were more straightforward for these things. I was reading about the fructose test and there is no way my regular doc is going to agree to doing that test. Maybe I should try to go see a GI doc again finally.

I have noticed that immediately after having cereal in the morning I get all burpy. I don't know if that's an indication of some particular food sensitivity. And I also know that lots of tomato sauce creates lots of bizarre stomach noise. Mysterious!

I'd probably initially go with a food diary/eliminating and reintroducing possible culprits if you're suspicious (I would be if things like onions are also problematic).

Well I am supposed to get the celiac panel, so hopefully I will find out stuff soon. But I heard the panel is not as accurate of a test, but I rather this than them taking a piece of my intestines to biopsy (I had a colonoscopy. I do not want to go through that again.)

I forgot to ask the doc about an allergy panel for all the common allergies. Oops. But apparently my thyroid is normal (I got it tested in 2007) so celiac is my last one that I know of.

And guess who ate pasta on Sunday after a few weeks break and then had a sneak attack in the morning? Yup, that sucked.

Appi, my mom is freaking out about being gluten-free AND vegan. She wants me to quit vegan if I have celiac or give up gluten. Any advice? And how are you making the change? Because my life depends on carbs.

it's actually much easier than i thought it would be, and whenever i panic i remember some people are vegan and allergic to gluten and soy - that has to be rough!

have you looked in the gluten-free section of the kitchen here on the forum?

i'm on my way to bed so not feeling super smart about sharing helpful details right now, but . . . :)

for breakfast most days i have a smoothie (soy milk, banana(s), berries, vanilla rice protein) and there are gluten free cereals (we love the frosted flakes by enviro kidz). brown rice pasta is good if you top it with stuff. i make tex mex with corn tortilla wraps instead of flour.

I have been told by doctors that I have IBS. I think have celiac disease though.
I having been living with it for 24 years. I feel dreadful when I have wheat gluten, even gluten free oats.
I get cold sores, rashes, bloated stomach, runs, and I sneeze like mad.

I feel so much better when I don't eat it. I wonder if the UK's NHS does free testing?

How did you come to know you have IBS? Were you diagnosed? I have been having problems for 30+ years with that...realm. But instead of the attacks you describe, I seem to have the opposite problem, of weeks long...blockage. Bloating, pain, really irregular patterns. Does IBS take multiple forms? Did you see specialists? Did you try eliminating gluten on your own, or with medical advice?

I had a list of symptoms - I just sat down one day and wrote down anything that was wrong with me - headaches, skin issues . . . anything. I gave this list to one doctor and she said I must be depressed. A year or so later I gave the list to a different doc and he looked at it for seconds and said "Oh, you probably have IBS" and bam it was enlightening. Then a diff doc (med student, I think - he had to look up medicines in a book - so reassuring) gave me some Rx and I decided instead to keep a food diary and track triggers (IBS triggers for me include gluten and raw cabbage)

Yea, IBS is considered the elimination diagnosis. If they have done every test they can think of and you come back "normal" then you must have IBS. So far, IBS doesn't destroy your digestive system, even though it feels like it does, and isn't a future risk for cancer. Crohn's, Celiac, all the big ones do break down your system and are huge risks for GI cancers. IBS also can cause depression and anxiety (I wonder why *this is sarcastic*)

It sucks that we have to suffer, but hopefully one day they will figure this out.
