My partner and I had a conversation last night regarding washing your hands after peeing if you have a penis.

I say if you touch your genitals at all (peeing or not) you should wash your hands after.

He says that you do not have to wash, as the area was (probably) cleaned in the shower in the morning. He adds the point that if your hands do not get pee on them you do not have to wash your hands.

What say you?

Is it different for those with a vagina? Should all genitals be treated the same?

I'm guessing you've probably put that thing in your mouth at some point, so in comparison, it seems like a fairly minor concern.

I caveat this with the statement that I always wash my hands, BUT!

I was so surprised once when a guy told me that he thought it was much more important for girls to wash than guys, since the girl's hand is closer to the pee via the toilet paper. And I was like, But you touch the actual genital! I had always considered hand washing more important for the guys.

Now, though, I consider post-potty washing just part of the intermittent washing throughout the day that keeps me reasonably healthy.

The moral of the story is wash you hands. I think.

Right, but I don't put every guy's dick in my mouth, so it would be nice if, when I shake a random guys hand, I can be reasonably sure he hadn't just touched his dick.

I don't always wash after I pee, but I find it grosser to touch the door handle than I worry about my own bits. but that said, it's not uncommon that I'll hold coins in my lips or eat food after patting pets and such.

the way I see it: if it's worse that I'm touching myself than touching, well, anything else in the world, then I probably have some issues. if anything, we should wash our hands BEFORE we go pee, so we're not infecting our sensitive bits!

I dont understand the view point that ones dick or vagina is swimming in filth and one needs to immediately sanitize their hands at the mere touch of it.

Cleanliness is a good thing, but I think too many people work themselves into a germaphobe state about things unnecessarily.

And also, isn't pee sterile anyway (or is that an urban myth).

So really, you should pee all over your hands after touching 'down there' then tuck it all back in using tissue paper.

I think it's more the rest of the bathroom that's germy. If you're flushing, touching doorknobs, etc, it won't hurt anything to wash your hands. Especially during cold and flu season.

I am pro people washing their hands after using the facilities in general.

Yeah, I'm less worried about pee and genital cooties than I am about bathroom germs. Plus, it's flu season people! Wash your hands as often as you have cause to do so!

I really don't want anyone's dick/ball/vag sweat/secretions on my hands though shaking hands, handling door handles etc. Not washing your hands after going to the toilet does put others at risk of infection, especially physically vulnerable people like me so I don't appreciate it. You never get to know who you've made ill so there's basically no need to be so forking lazy people.

It's only sterile to the person who owns the pee, assuming they don't have an infection.

Hand washing is one of the best ways to combat certain illnesses, both in terms of avoiding getting and avoiding sharing it. I wouldn't think to just wash my hands at points during the day but by coupling it with bathroom visits, I help to clear my hands of some of the other things I may have picked up around the office.

I am not scared of germs, but I mainly don't wash my hands unless I have visible dirt because of my eczema. I use hand sanitizer when I have it, but if it's down to not washing my hands after peeing or reapplying the wall of lotion that I spent 30 minutes building up that day, i'm going to keep my lotion forcefield in tact.

I don't know - I remember on Mythbusters they did bacteria testing of a number of different household locations (swabbed the toilet seat, kitchen sink, counter, etc.). They found that the kitchen was FAR AND AWAY the most heavily "contaminated" with bacteria. The bathroom, surprisingly, was pretty much clear of bacteria on most surfaces. Sure, Mythbusters isn't exactly scientific authority, and if someone can refute this, please do, but it seems plausible to me.

My boyfriend steadfastly refuses to wash his hands for the same reasons OP's partner uses, and it drives me insane.
I probably wash my hands 10-15 times/day and have to try pretty hard not to do it more often. A decade or so ago, I was doing it upwards of 50 times a day.

Aside from my personal addiction to handwashing, there are definitely times I think it should be pretty much SOP for everyone to wash their hands: before and after preparing or eating food, after taking out the trash or cleaning the litter box, before touching someone else's junk, and definitely after using the restroom, regardless of gender or junk-touching.

I always wash my hands at work or in a public restroom. At home by myself, not so much.

But it does seem a little superstitious to me. Like, it's not about germs, it's about intimacy. Or something.

But why the assumption that penises are dirtier or germier than elbows?
