A lot of people have different concoctions that they swear by for better health. What's your poison? If it's not from a cookbook, post the recipe! Unless it's from your cookbook... Then you can post whatever you want. :-)

I don't know if it's a health tonic, but I've been all about green protein smoothies lately. I use 1/2 cup blueberries, 1/2 cup strawberries, 1/2 cup or so of juice (I like Knudsen's VitaJuice), 1 - 2 tbsp protein powder, and 2 - 3 cups of spinach.

Anytime I feel a cold coming on I make this:

juice of 1 lemon
1 clove garlic
1 chunk ginger
1/2 tsp cayenne

It works every time!

Do you blend it? Chop it? Infuse it?

Also, my dad drinks something similar. He will put a TON of garlic in a giant jar of water with cayenne pepper, let it sit, and then a few days later drink it. I don't remember if he boils the garlic with the water, or what...

I sometimes drink Braggs Cider Vinegar with water.

I like lemon juice in hot water 1st thing in the AM, I forget where I first heard it but I know Jae Steele put it in Get It Ripe and that made me start doing it again, I dunno if it really has any health benefits but it's really refreshing.

Also used to do Bragg's ACV in water but I kind of hate the taste so I stopped.

Also tea made from dried elderberries is my cure-all, I drinks shitloads of it all winter basically.

i was given a container full of cassia seeds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senna_occidentalis) from my in-laws, who swear that every woman in the family has roasted these seeds and drunk the tea as a health tonic since Amaterasu left her cave. It's supposed to do everything from kill cancer cells to make you poop.
Of course I did a search in the plant database and found that every part of the plant is poisonous and I'm waiting to be found dead of complex organ failure. Supposedly if you roast it it's not poisonous. I drink a cup of it every once in a while, just to tempt fate.

I use cassia powder mixed with my henna to dye my hair, it gives nice golden tones! I want to try the roasted seeds now- how do you roast them? Just in a frying pan?

yeah, i roast them in the cast iron pan and it makes a nice dark tea- brazilians tell me that country folk up north near the jungle where coffee doesn't grow anymore have used this as a coffee substitute- it's not even close, honestly, but it does have a nice smokey somethin-somethin.

Lots of ginger boiled into some water (like a tea) with a large dose of agave and lemon juice, and maybe black pepper. This is from an Indian woman at work, it's delicious! She swears by it for throat scratchiness.

I like miso broth with garlic and ginger and a little tamari and with a coupla drops toasted sesame oil or gomasio made with toasted black sesame seeds added to it. A little cayenne is also a great addition to it. This is for colds/flu and rundown feeling...or when I am achy in general.

For upset stomach I have grated ginger tea.

Mmmmm these all sound great. Yeah, I used to the the Bragg's ACV tonic... And even though I keep telling myself to start it back up again, I keep slacking. I need to get a big asparagus mason jar and make a ton at a time like I used to (but use agave nectar or something else other than honey, of course).

There is talk of a juicer under the tree. Does anyone have a rec for a good one? (Easy to clean, can make me some serious juice -- maybe even wheatgrass).

Cayenne tea! About 1/8 teaspoon in a cup of hot water. Sip it s-l-o-w-l-y over a couple of hours. Really good for sore throat and lingering colds.
