Is there a difference—I mean a difference that matters to my health—between D2 and D3?

I think that stuff is not actually vegan as it is "fed" lanolin as a starter...check this out:

http://www.vrg.org/blog/2010/03/29/gard ... m-lanolin/

It's pretty sneaky of them, I think, to promote it as vegan.

I always just thought that D3 was more readily absorbed, but I'm not positive. That's why I take large amounts of D2, because it's not as easily absorbed I think?

Yeah, that's what I've always been told. That like D2 is okaaay, but D3 is super and one step up from D2. And that's what my mom's doctor told her to take because her bones are all old and female, so I'm glad there's a vegan one I recommend to her.

I've been told that more and more studies are showing that D2 is just as good as D3.

I wonder how that can be true. Irradiated mushrooms do store D2 but I've never heard of them containing D3.

I'd be weary that it's actually vegan.

See, this would be a nice time to be able to go back and edit my post now that I've read the rest of the thread.

that is strange- why is it every time someone comes out with a vegan D3 it's always a little bit shady and suspicious?

also props to vegimator because he was the one who pointed out that the Raw D3 was grown with a lanolin starter on the old boards!

I wouldn't call it sneaky. I mean, they're pretty explicit about their process: http://www.gardenoflife.com/vitamin-cod ... fault.aspx

And they do make an interesting point that organic fruits and vegetables are also "fed" animals products (not just manure but things like fish emulsion or bone meal), and those are considered suitable for vegans.

I guess sneaky isn't the right word, but it rubs me the wrong way that they boldly call it vegan and then have a whole separate convoluted page-long explanation about why it's vegan. To me, if it's vegan, it shouldn't need so much explaining.

The manure analogy bothers me. Maybe because it sounds so much like they're stretching the case so that it will make their product appear vegan. It's basically saying, well if vegans eat fruits and vegetables grown with manure, why not this supplement? That sounds to me a little like people saying, well if you can't avoid a few animal producst here and there (like in your bike tires or computer casings), why even bother being vegan at all?

I dunno, this probably makes no sense. Anyone have a more rational explanation?

Garden of Life and Nature's Plus - Source of Life Garden are different brands. Perhaps there are similarities in their production though? However, on the Nature's Plus website it says "Source of Life Garden™ Vitamin D3 Caps with Organic Gold Standard Nutrients is the first supplement to provide 5000 IU of 100% plant-source cholecalciferol." I wonder if the 100% plant source is true or whether they're being misleading. And like vegimator said - how are they getting the mushrooms to make D3, if they are?

Awww, I was all excited before and now I'm all suspicious. I had a blood test and my Vitamin D levels are hella low (I think they said 4 out of what should be 50?) and my doctor wants me to take 5000 IU D3 a day for 4 months (I think that's what it was?). I have a follow up with her on Wednesday (I got this first bit of info via voicemail), and was ready to be all "D2! D2! D2!" when I saw her but was excited to instead find a "vegan" source of D3.

This makes me wonder if the mushrooms at the grocery store that say they contain vitamin D are grown on lanolin. I seem to remember some explanation about exposing them to light, but I can't remember where I heard that.

Yeah, they're exposed to UV light, but they are Vitamin D2, not D3. I don't think I'd worry about those being grown on lanolin.

Yeah, this. They're definitely vegan.

uhh.. not sure what to tell. When my blood results came back with low vitamin D (D2 and D3 were broken out), I asked her about D3 and she said that I should be taking D2 and not D3. I got a prescription for vitamin D from her and it was vitamin D2. I don't want to misquote what she said specifically but it had something to do with the fact that our bodies make Vitamin D3 but maybe D2 helps in that process? I don't want to say something crazy because I can't remember exactly what she said about it.
