After at least 20 years of wondering I think I have finally found out what my stomach problems are caused by. Thinking of life without tomatoes makes me want to cry.

I remember from veganmofo that a couple of people couldn't eat tomatoes and blogged about it but now I can't remember who. There was one great guide to substitutions for all nightshades. I read the whole thing but I didn't save it because I didn't know I had that problem. Can anyone direct me?

My friend is tomato allergic.
That's all.
I'm really helpful.

Oh no! I love tomatoes! And all nightshades. I was once eating tomatoes so much that I tried finding out if it was bad for me (or if nightshades were bad). I couldn't find any reliable or scientific sources that proved nightshades in particular were bad. But you may be allergic to them. I hope you find out what's going on!

I think you might be talking about my blog (http://vegetalion.blogspot.com), as I wrote a substitution guide during VeganMoFo. I hope it's helpful!

If you have any questions/issues regarding phasing out nightshades, feel free to PM/email me. I've been eating/living nightshade free since 2007.

I wish tomatoes didn't try to hurt me. I used to love them.

I just read vegetalion's post about tomatoes. I never would have thought of barbecue sauce!

My sisters-in-law both avoid tomatoes because of acid reflux. One also has to avoid garlic, onions, peppers, spicy food, and peanuts!

I would have a really hard time in life if I hadn't found a substitution for barbeque sauce.

Your poor sister-in-law. I live in fear of ever having to give up garlic. My boyfriend's mother can't eat it; I didn't even know people could be garlic intolerant until I met her. She said she thinks her intolerance came on when she overdid it on garlic. I "overdo it" with garlic EVERY DAY.

My tomato sensitivity is generally proportional to my stress levels and also tends to be cumulative. So if I'm extra stressed out and eat tomatoes at several meals in a row, I'll get really sick. If I'm nice and calm, and eat tomatoes just once, I'll probably be fine. So for instance if I know I'm going to eat a meal with tomatoes, I'll avoid them for a few meals before, and try to keep my stress levels low.

I am definitely affected by stress too.

It also seems like fresh tomatoes aren't as much as a problem with canned tomatoes, I hope that isn't just my imagination.
