Aw, I'm sorry. I just wanted to say, your blog sounds amazing!

Thanks! I stopped updating once I started trying to lose weight, but maybe one day it will be resurrected. Mac n' cheese is still my favorite food, I just don't eat it as much these days.

You should probably look up the calorie content of pecan pie before you eat half of one. Lesson learned. The delicious way.

Well, that is what got me in this mess in the first place! Its apparently been way too long since I last thought about things like portion size and calorie content. I thought breastfeeding would make my extra pounds just disappear, but apparently I am really skilled at replacing them.

Mmmmmm pie.

Yeah, I definitely know what you mean. I trust that you're not beating yourself up about it though, which is what I was more concerned about. I think it's way too easy to get discouraged when there's no reason. I was thinking about you today, Tofulish. I got a scone that I didn't really need, but I thought, ok, savor it. I chewed it slowly and tried to appreciate the different textures and flavor.

I don't know if this is you, so I'm just putting it out there, but I know that when I try to restrict I turn obsessive almost immediately which means binging is around the corner (I am totally not trying to imply this was a binge cause I have no idea. It may just have been you enjoying some pie! But it seems like you are struggling lately with trying to restrict but eating more than you're wanting to). I have had to radically shift my relationship with food to understand it as something that nourishes me and that I need to get *enough* of rather than something I need to eat the absolute minimum of.

I'm really liking the Go Kaleo blog right now, which is a woman who went from about 230 lbs to whatever is healthy for her 160 or something (but pure muscle) by "eating all the food". Her big thing is that women have been taught from day one to treat food as an enemy and to eat as little as possible but that restriction tells our body to shore up the reserves and so we actually set ourselves up to lose really slowly because our body is going into protection mode, which in turn spurs us to restrict even further, which leads to ill health until we break down and can't take it anymore and say "fork it, I'm eating what I want!"

Anyway, I hope I'm not overstepping, I just know how quickly trying to lose weight can lead to crazytown and wanted to share what I have found to be helpful.

I've appreciated reading the throwing food away vs. eating too much food stuff...I struggle with that, too.
Nothing to add really; sometimes it's just nice knowing I'm not alone.

I'm definitely pro not ruling anything out because it is "bad" for you. I do try limit sugar because of the meds that I am on. This week I'm hoping to not buy any biscuits until next weekend. That is my challenge to myself because when biscuits are around I eat the whole packet in one go.

Also it is now bright enough in the evening to do a whole hour walk in the woods after work. That coupled with my half hour walk in the morning should mean I get a hell of a lot more exercise which is totally going to make me look fab.

J-dub, it kills me how wise you are. I wanted to say something like that for why it's ok sometimes just to throw the food away, because overheating then restricting can lead to wonky metabolism. But by that I don't mean having something lighter for the next meal, but what I'm tempted to do (say I'm done for the day because I've used all my calories, which forks my metabolism). That's why I'm so big about not beating myself up and making sure my next meal is veggie loaded or something.

I'm a total Go Kaleo fan! I didn't realize how much I categorized foods as "good" or "bad" until I started reading her blog. If I was eating only "healthy" food then I would have a craving and end up binging, etc etc.

Ok, I'm going back to tracking. I already paid for the live strong app years ago, so I'm just going to use that. The difference is what I've been reading on the GoKaleo blog. http://gokaleo.com/

Check out the metabolic calc here: http://www.health-calc.com/diet/energy-expenditure-advanced and the weight loss calc http://www.health-calc.com/diet/weight-loss-calculator.

I didn't like tracking because LiveStrong always told me that I need a ridiculously low amount of calories to lose weight, but this is feasible. I'm not saying it's the holy grail, but it makes sense. Now to see if I'm eating 2000 calories when I think I am.

mhm, nice calculators but I dont know how much I can trust them. Basically I should be able to lose 1-2 pounds a week if I eat 1800 calories. Maybe I don't calculate well enough but it doesn't sound true. Maybe I should try it before I knock it!

I haven't tried it yet either, honestly, but I want to believe it, so I'm going to give it a genuine shot. I've calculated rest days, strength training or fitness class days, and running days, so I have an idea of calorie needs/goals for each.

I'm not sure if I want to do this or have ONE calorie goal for every day. And I really find it difficult to calculate how much standing/walking I do in a day. An hour? More?
Mhm, then I'd still aim for 1800 calories on no-gym days and ... I don't know. On gym days it tells me, if you follow the "no more than 1000 calorie deficit" rule that I should eat at least 2400 but that doesn't seem right.

It's really, really hard to break out of the mindset that we need to have a severe restriction to lose weight! But if your BMR is say around 1500 calories, that's the amount you need to simply stay alive if you lay in bed all day. So if you're active (which it sounds like you are), even 1800 may be too little for you to support the activity that you're doing. Our bodies evolved to create homeostasis in the best and worst of times, so if you start restricting your body is going to hold on to everything. But if you are giving your body enough to support everything you're doing but creating a very small deficit, your body will let go of the weight it doesn't need.

And remember too that if you've been treating your body unkindly for years, it's going to take more than a week or two to undue that by eating the food you actually need.

It took me several years to drop fifty pounds but I have stayed at that same weight for about three years now (other than this recent post-surgery weight gain that was, I think, probably pretty good for my body) without having to think about what I was eating or how much I was exercising.

I think I worry about this because I have constantly been gaining weight the past 2 months. 10 Pounds in two months worries me. I don't binge. I don't eat like crazy. I suspect it might be my hormones but even if this is the case I just cant gain more weight at the moment because it negatively impacts other parts of my health and life.

I think you've mentioned disordered eating and heavy restriction in the past...is it possible that your body is just getting its needs met right now despite your wishes?

I somehow doubt it but I'm not sure. I was eating the same way last year, didn't restrict and lost 20 pounds. I thought my body was "ok" then. i did eat 2000+, to be honest. But I was losing slowly... I am heavily overweight and my body feels so much worse at this weight I am now. I feel less mobile and get out of breath easily. Not to mention the mental aspects, of course.

If you've gained 10 lbs in the last two months, but you haven't changed your diet or exercise amounts, have you been taking a new medication? Have you stopped one? Maybe you need to speak to a dr about a possible thyroid problem?

Yeah, I agree with Moon, sounds like a trip to the doctor might be a good idea.

I think the estimates on the calculator linked to above are too high. I use this one: http://scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/

The TDEE it gives me is pretty accurate. Eating that number + exercise calories (heart rate monitor) works out to maintenance for me.

I am on thyroid medication. I went to a specialist last month and still haven't heard back from him. I was told last year that I have Hashimoto's and now he said he doesn't think that I have and that my weight gain, hair loss & crappy skin are part side effect & part weight gain. and that im probably gaining weight because the meds increase my appetite. That's why I started tracking my intake again. Now I'm lowering my hormone dosage but Im pretty much somewhere in betwen. Well, and he told me to lose weight to get rid of the other stuff. :/

Interesting! It gave me about the same numbers, so I'm going to move forward!

Uggggh, that sucks. Makes the whole tracking calories thing totally different for you, I guess.
