The wikipedia article has definitely just confused me more as to the composition of my earwax. My wax is definitely NOT grey... even the flaky parts are an amber color. So maybe I've got wet wax that just dries out for some reason?

Something to add to the "simple things that blow your mind" thread: earwax. Particularly the dry and flakey variety. I never even knew that existed!

Both! Sometimes my ears have yellowish dry crumbly wax and other times moist reddish-brown. The worse my allergies are, the wetter and darker the earwax (and the greater the amount, so I am also a bad q-tip user).

I had no idea that everyone's earwax wasn't the same. Mine's "wet" by the wikipedia standards, and orangish.

Sometimes I get flaky crepe all around the place, other times it's... gloopy. I have to get my ears irrigated by a nurse every so often as it compacts and then I can't hear properly. It's kinda fun to get done! Though I haven't had it done since I've gotten tragus and anti-tragus piercings and now I'm a bit scared to go incase she makes me take them out. I had a tragus piercing when I got my ears syringed and it was fine. A big old lump came out, it was freaking vile, but fascinating at the same time.

All you people sticking q-tips in your ears scare me. Squirting hydrogen peroxide in your ear canal with a bulb syringe is the way to go--no risk of puncturing it.

I'm confused by the wet/dry, but I want to PSA against q-tips! I used them all my life (loved them) until 1-2 years ago. I never thought I had any wax buildup (and even had it checked), but I guess it built up over some time. My ear ended up getting stopped up for several weeks (like hard to hear stopped up), and I tried EVERYTHING. I finally ended up clearing it with H2O2 and alcohol, but it was not fun. You really do get used to not q-tipping.
..carry on

I have wet earwax. My boyfriend tried to get me to stop using q-tips, because he claimed that the earwax just falls out when you sleep. Well, after trying it for a couple of months, and just ending up being unable to hear, I realized that his method only works for him because he has dry earwax.
