I feel a sore throat coming on...and I want to fight the dastardly thing. What's your best advice? Emergen-C? Zinc? What fruits and veggies should I be focusing on?

I always do Emergen-C when I think a cold is coming on, but it's probably superstition as much as anything... though I haven't been sick since February of 2009, so that's something. I had a sore throat a couple of weeks ago for about half a day, then a tickle that stuck around for a couple of days. I drank herbal tea just to sort of soothe and relax my throat and it didn't turn into anything. I also try to get plenty of sleep if I think I might be getting sick.

Definitely this, and they also make an echinacea tea that works well for warding off sickness. Be sure to get plenty of rest, even if you're not fully "sick" yet.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Unfortunately I cannot stand licorice so the throat coat is out, but the Spork sisters recommended steeping ginger + cinnamon sticks to boost immunity. I did that today and it was actually really soothing and tasty.

Get thee to a neti pot before your nose gets stuffy! Good luck.

Gargling/drinking a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in some warm water helps me get rid of a sore throat. I'm not sure yet how it helps stave off colds, I don't do it regularly enough.

I generally alternate between elderberry tea or tincture, Umcka ColdCare, and olive leaf extract when trying to stave off a cold, but last time it was unsuccessful- I'm just getting over a bisque of a cold that lasted almost 2 weeks.

That sounds lovely. What amounts did you use, and how long did you steep it?

I just cut up 3-5 slices (about 1/4in each) and broke a cinnamon stick in half, threw it in my french press with 2 cups of almost boiling water and let it steep about 5 minutes. I'm sure you could adjust to your liking. I also re-steeped with the same ginger and cinnamon later and it was just as good.

I feel a sore throat coming on too and I'm really hoping that it doesn't turn into a full-blown cold. So far, I've just been sipping on tea/hot water and taking some ibuprofen. I like Throat Coat, but that stuff is vile if the temperature is anything but near boiling-hot.

I second Tofulish's oregano oil recommendation.

Yeah, I usually start taking airborne as soon as people around me start getting sick.

Barley tea never fails to make me feel better. Also, um, I rely on modern medicine when it comes to colds, because mine get vicious if I don't treat them harsh and fast. So, if you want a medicine that will help your throat and also stave off any other symptoms, I like TheraFlu- it's a medicated powder you mix with hot water and drink like tea. It tastes sort of like hot lemonade.

And sleep. All the sleep. Hot showers help too.

I make soup with a ridiculous amount of garlic, some miso, lemon, and red pepper flakes. I add whatever vegetables are around into the soup, and eat as much of it as possible. It seems to help.

Juice of one lemon
Large chunk of ginger
Large clove of garlic
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Agave to sweeten, optional

Blend in magic bullet or blender, drink up! This works for me every time!

Everyone in my Pharmacy swears by Emergen-C an zinc. I throw in a hearty dose of something full of ginger and garlic just to be sure...

Grapefruit Seed Extract in water tastes really gross but it works wonders. I also take a spoonful of garlic with honey on top when I think I'm getting sick. Zinc lozenges are also great. I teach first grade so I am constantly around runny noses and I never get sick!! I have so many weird cold remedies that I think my coworkers are starting to think that I'm a witch doctor. ;)

Ginger tea really helps me for sore throats. I also like making a soup with ginger, garlic, and lemongrass.

With oregano oil, do you take it daily or just when you feel something coming on?

I'm not above taking some NyQuil so I can sleep, too.

Emergen-C is my friend, I add it to my green smoothies year-round. There's lots of B-12 in there in addition to the C.
