I'm giving serious thought to registering for a half marathon in April. Right now the furthest I've run is 4 miles, but I absolutely think I can do it.

Do it! I was up to ~7 miles when I started a 10-week program for my first half and I really didn't even need to be that far along... I think 5/5.5 would have been a fine place to start. You have a lot of time to build mileage before you start a structured training plan.

I registered for my first half before I'd even started running! I went from not running at all to my first half in six months, and it was fine. You already have a base built up, so five months is more than enough time. Go for it!

Went running today and it started raining. I thought I would dread it but it was actually nice, just some sprinkling. I actually like running outdoors now! And being able to take a hot bath when I got home was divine.

I ran my first 10k race today! It was pretty exciting! The course was very hilly, so I went slower than I would have liked and finished in just over an hour, when I would have loved to have been under. But at the same time the race itself didn't feel that bad, and I feel confident that if it had been flat I would have finished in my target time. I'm very motivated to keep it up, anyway.

However, my gripe of the day is that at the finish line there was a van handing out free bacon sandwiches. No meat free alternatives. Boo.

Well done Jenny! I am not interested in races at the moment but I ran 10k this morning after really not wanting to get out of bed and it felt brilliant. (just over an hour too)

Whoohoo, Jenny and Efcliz!

I got a half marathon PR yesterday (1:54:05) - beat my previous best by just over 3 minutes! But I wasn't fast enough to get a pair of the limited number of gloves they were giving out -boo.

I went out running yesterday for the first time since moving, and it was fantastic. Here's to a hopefully solid start back into things.

Congrats all around!

I dragged myself out for my first cold weather run today. I had to leave work early in order to run before it was pitch dark. Winter, ugh!

Just back from a 40 minute run around frozen streets. Great way to start the day. (I'm determined to stay positive about running outide this winter!)
It was lovely to get back into a warm house & then have a hot shower. Just tucking into a lovely bowl of porridge before work.

That's the best part about running outside when it's cold - the warming back up part. WTG, chickpea!

What do you wear for cold weather running? I'm just getting back into running and am definitely not prepared for running in these temps!

I tend to overheat, so I usually wear running tights, a base layer on top, and then a running jacket and a wicking toque. I'd like to get a vest and I definitely need a new pair of gloves. I'm usually cold when I start, but 10 min in and I'm fine.

I don't have the gear to run in much colder conditions (like below -10C or so) because I usually head indoors at that point.

I find that I must wear a hat & gloves & that my legs get very cold, so I just bought thick, thermal running tights & they seem to be working well. On my top I just wear a long sleeve base layer & running jacket & that's plenty although occasionally I will put a very lightweight florescent jacket over my running jacket if it is VERY cold, wet, windy & dark.

That's a good point Chickpea, all of my running clothes are dark, not helpful for running in the winter when it's so dark out! I should get something fluorescent.

Boo, out with what I think is a hamstring injury (it's in the lower part of the back of my leg, over to one side, above the back of my knee). It didn't hurt at all during my run yesterday but damn it's sore today. Will ice and foam roll and hope for the best.

Agh! That sucks! I hope ice & the foam roller works.

I ran 12 miles through a gluteal pain last sunday and apparently it was a strain, so, uh, whoops? Took most of this past week off everything except biking to work. I iced the first two days after wards as well as stretched and foam rolled most days of the week except yesterday. I ran hills on friday and managed to keep the pain away, just a dull tight/discomfort, so I stretched/foam rolled friday evening and I had some minor pain on saturday but I went for 2.5ish miles this morning and it was ok, just kind of tight on the ups/downs so I didn't go longer and just went straight to my weight workout instead of going longer. Stretched/foam rolled after.

I HATE injuries. Hate them. I have a half marathon in 3 weeks so I think I'm just going to try do short mileage almost every day this week to keep my weekly mileage up and do one last longish run next sunday (maybe like 10-11 miles?) and hope for the best. Obviously going to keep stretching and foam rolling most days to keep my muscles from pulling on the strain as much as possible.

I also hate injuries... specially when they come close to a race.

Anyway if it is a muscle strain I would not do any stretching.

The stretching's been helping a bit? I've been taking it pretty easy and I'm going to get new shoes (I know, but I think half my injuries could probably be prevented by getting shoes ON TIME instead of 2 months after i should have) since I'm pretty sure my old beat up ones are exacerbating the issue.

You all convinced me! I've started training for my half marathon, and I convinced my boss to do it with me!
